I might try going this weekend then, if I can get things to align as far as childcare goes. Do you have any pics of what it looks like on the shore? I'm not 100% sure what I'd be looking for. Any tips to impart to a noob? If this weekend doesn't work out I might try next. It looks like the flow rate there has been on the decline and I don't see it rapidly increasing by then. EDIT: Is this the boat ramp you mentioned? Just want to make sure in case there are more than one

Yeah, I am in total agreement, that looks like some super nice rough! We have nothing like that here where I live, I mostly have to buy good rough. The last retreating glaciers pretty much ground it all up in to sand.

I never turn away material...especially from you!! You know I'm good for a trade or two! Funny story: When my wife and I got married, I got her a hot air balloon ride for a wedding gift. She had never flown before, so I figured that would be a nice surprise. She was excited about it...but a little nervous. We went for the ride...and boy was it a ride!! They launch first thing in the morning when it's cooler...but as we were sailing along, the wind picked up like crazy. It blew us into the National Park...where you're not supposed to land hot air balloons! Well...we didn't land...we crashed when we came down! Everyone got banged up pretty good...but no major injuries. My wife ended up with a decent bruise on her knee. When we got home, we were taking pictures of the injuries...and "someone" came up with the idea to put on a bunch of eye make-up and make it look like she had a black eye...then send the pictures to her family with the saying "Well this happened only a few days after the wedding!" - and wait to see which of her family was going to react first! So we did! LOL Oh no, good intentions gone bad. You probably had a blast, perhaps not the better half. I'm jealous(as long as no life was lost) Thankful no one was injured severely. You got a long ride at no charge ! I know you were attempting a romantic outcome where you swept here off her feet ! Maybe that happened anyway, I hope so. Bet you guys cherish the memory. Perhaps not the inlaws... It brought to mind this song except substitute "brass bed" for "hot air balloon basket": Thankfully the in-laws have a good sense of humor! LOL It must not have affected my father-in-law too badly...he still wants to take me out rock hounding. Of course...now that I think about it...he does keep wanting to take me to a canyon which has a steep cliff side to it! Hmmmmm!!! LOL

EDIT: Is this the boat ramp you mentioned? Just want to make sure in case there are more than one Yes that is the ramp. Yes the flow has dropped from 256 to 203 cfs. Yes the time to go is now, one storm between now and next weekend can dash your trip. Check weather for storms/rain if doing next weekend.. I do have a photo album for that section. It is beautiful and the geology is complex and makes it beautiful. This is the best collecting spot on the left I mentioned. enough coral to sink your barge Take a small hammer to knock a chip off each coral head to warrant if it has pretty innards. It is a selection process... Closer in view of same left side rock bar where a spring flow is bringing color making metal salts to what looks like about 100 small coral heads. Now the sand shifts depending on river flows and can cover up the treasures but the coral is thick both under the sand and in the river bottom at this point ! I haven't been to this spot in a decade, it could be picked over...: And this is that section of the river during summer down 1 mile and up a half mile: www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/albums/72157646338371968/with/14817758639/Found a rare Paleo era Edgefield scraper at this stretch. A very old and distinct design artifact. Its design dates the site to mastodon age. Even the river polish warrants it to be very old as coral does not polish overnight in river flows.

The last retreating glaciers pretty much ground it all up in to sand. No need to buy fine rough if collecting on the Suwannee. However the long trips to the gemmy stuff makes buying rough a viable alternative.

LOL Certain that your in laws are thankful to have you as an addition to the family. Wish there were 100 Jasons on RTH. Being in a hot air balloon with those strong western winds seems like a recipe from some serious excitement. Glad you guys escaped ok.

Well, I wasn't able to go this past weekend. Was just to short of notice when it comes to getting someone to watch the kids. There is a tropical storm heading this way apparently... if the weather isn't bad and the conditions are still good, my wife and I are going to try going this weekend.

Nicole will probably dump 2 to 4 inches in the Okefenokee Swamp by Friday which dictates water levels on the Suwannee. That may delay any coral collecting trips for a long time. Sorry. Couldn't have been a worse scenario. So is coral collecting. 2007 - 2009 the rives stayed low. After that the rivers stayed full for almost 3 years and prevented any collecting. Hurricane season is touch and go for low river levels. Best is summer droughts when the water is low and warm.
