Thanks for the likes and comments. Don't have all my photos here but I have a few on this laptop. Heavy four foot shell tree minus the lights and other Christmas bling. Takes both of us to carry it into the living room to put on the library table. Close up photo of the small one that goes on the pine dining room table. A deer for the yard. Beautiful! That four footer is amazing. It just begs to be studied up close.

I do have a Christmas tree. It's about 12" tall purple. I do put it out once in a while. I had forgotten about it until a little while ago when I was rummaging in the closet.

Patty the frame is the largest styrofoam one that you can get at one of the craft stores. She goes to Michaels and Hobby Lobby so that is where it came from. All of the shells are glued in with hot melt glue from a glue gun. All of the shells are the inside spirals from weathered and rolled whelk shells. They call them twisties here. For a base I found a large circle of unfinished pine at Lowes and glued the tree form to it. They put round bases on all the different size trees. Ladies down along our coast are making these and selling them to tourists for big bucks.

Thanks Rick, I do like it & will attempt one. We certainly have a LOT of shells here.
I have taken to make bezel set earrings & pendants out of what I call "tops" (broken snail shells). So why not a tree out of "bottoms ".
Thanks to your wife for the idea & inspiration.

Well, it looks like a majority prefer the convenience of fake trees- or, should I say "artificial trees"? I'm actually not tooooo surprised, although I thought it would be closer. In this busy day and age, we want a tree without the hassle.
Thanks for your votes and your stories.

Patty liveoak Patty and any others that may be interested in seashell ornaments and other items made from them, here are some photos that I took today. The ladies here on Edisto Beach SC have an abundance of shells and make many items this time of year. Hot melt glue was used to glue these together. Small styrofoam balls were used for the round oanaments. The single flowers have a round felt base that is available from hardware stores and are used to put under table, chair and furniture legs. Thanks you RickB, those are more great ideas. I do like the ornaments a lot, and look worth trying. Your wife & her friends are very creative. Thanks for sharing them. Patty

Some of my favorite Christmas memories involved art projects for my students in Fort Myers, Fl. and San Angelo, Tx. Sea shell candles in Fort Myers for elementary students and my Christmas project in San Angelo, Tx. were either swags or barb wire wreaths made by middle school students. A local rancher provided me a large quantity of weathered wire and the school provided all other materials to make the wreaths. I included gloves to loop and handle the wire during construction and when all components were added. This was such a popular project that a number of students had classmates and their teachers ask if they could make one for them.

Re Christmas trees: the older we get, the more inclined we are to fake and easy. It’s also nice that the artificial trees are developing to look actually real now. Plan to get ours up soon—- before Christmas!
