Looks super cool! What are the giant SiC? It is a 90% pure bulk metallurgical grade of SiC used for adding to molten steel to alter its properties. Made by Washington Mills. About 50% of it has those large garbanzo bean sized SiC chunks in it, the rest is SiC 20-30-40-50... ungraded particles. Easy to screen and separate by size. It was cheap at only 40 cents per pound and came in 50 pound bags.

Best way to purchase would be to contact Washington Mills Inc. and ask them.

It just doesn't compare to the tough stuff that you have in Georgia. I've been to quite a few digs in Georgia through the years digging for amethyst, quartz and rutile. Maybe it is the type of granite you have that it decomposes from.

Probably the lack of sand content here Rick. Because of the massive worn down granitic Appalachians the kaolin clay deposited from them in north/middle Georgia is very pure. It is the higher sand content that makes for easier digging.

New to the hobby but has anyone tried using distilled water to reduce blowouts? I make my own moonshine so no problem getting plenty of distilled water.

Blowouts are generally caused by the reaction of the rock to the water. Tumbling Glass will release a lot of gas too. And sometimes you can do the same tumble 15 times, and the 16th time you do it will be a blowout for No Reason at all. I check the barrels on the tumblers all the time, at least every 2 days looking for gas expansion.

Where did you get the material for the barrel itself? I found HDPE pipe covers but couldn’t find anything like the barrel you show. I’d also love to see your home built tumbler. Is there a post showing how you built it? many thanks! Doug

They are a piece of large PVC pipe with a cap glue welded to one end and a reducer fitting on the other. jamesp appears to use a short length of the pipe so the cap and reducer touch, I have seen others that are longer. Google MJR tumblers on ebay to see more examples of what I mean, MJR is ordering red colored fittings for theirs but essentially the same idea.

All good! I’ve seen the post before and even responded for more info. Someday I’ll build my own tumbling set up and am researching heavily. Thanks again!
