Very cool rockbrain ! Always love Fordite. With such a big rough chunk I’m assuming that’s newer stock? The old vintage stock is a pretty penny plus hard to find and not usually in such big chunks.

NDK I love this theme. rockbrain A great example of Fordite. Another possible material is counter scraps. I have many that are Terrazzo, composition Quartzite and dyed stone embedded in resin.

NDK Nate - does Gilson opal count as man made? My vote is yes...it is not in a "natural" state and was created in a lab... rockbrain - That cab is killer Gary! I love the mushroom effect on that one...and by that I do mean "those kind" of mushrooms! LOL

Is that the lab created opal? I’ve been gathering information to create it myself. I see the biggest hurdle is getting the silica particles to orient properly (or how they inlay when they settle out) I was wondering if adding the solution to pressure chamber would effect it.

I like that effect. Psychedelic piece Groovy Baby! Very cool rockbrain ! Always love Fordite. With such a big rough chunk I’m assuming that’s newer stock? It was pretty inexpensive and I don't know if I've seen the original stuff with metallic. Of course I haven't seen a whole lot of the original. I just bought 2 lbs on FB for $25. It should be quite a bit because this stuff is really light. NDK I love this theme. rockbrain A great example of Fordite. Another possible material is counter scraps. I won’t be entering. So one more off the list to compete with.
I thought it would be hilarious to pour a layer of art resin, then take a goofy picture of my dog smiling and put it face down on the first layer. Then pour a second layer over that and cut a cab out of it. Literally a “mans best friend” made cab 😂

realrockhound my doublets and triplets teacher would press leaves and put them between basinite and quartz for people to cab and polish while waiting for the epoxy to set. I still have mine somewhere.

OK, so here is mine. Since I got A LOT of manmade material in an estate a couple years ago, I used a bit of it. The "preform", synthetic turquoise, synthetic pink coral and fake lapis with white corian countertop, capped with manmade quartz. The cabochon. Enough flats? Notice that the center turquoise says Lov? Gotta Lov that... And a video...

That’s pretty rad. I like the effect on the bottom where the angle distorts it.

I think I have about 2 or so hours into assembling the pieces, fitting with a flat lap "jointer", and gluing up. A cab is usually 15-30 minutes this was probably a little longer with grinding the back flat.

So i've had a thought and didn't even consider this until I was looking through my different cabs I've attempted last night. I have a lovely star sapphire that Starguy was kind enough to send me...that's lab made - made by man...would that qualify here? Only thing is I don't have a pic of the rough, because I started it without considering the competition - but I do have another in rough form I could show - thoughts? I'm not 100% sure I could even finish before tomorrow, but would give it a go if it was acceptable. Let me know.

Well, since some knucklehead forgot to include a piece of Fordite in a box sent to you, I'm all for the sapphire qualifying!! It's true...it is manmade. I think the pic of the "other" piece of rough would qualify. Heck...people forget to take pics of the "before" all the time!
