The cubes I've tumbling have given me nothing but trouble. It makes me wonder if they were cut from some evil rock and now they are mad at me. First they ate a hole in the lid of the tumbler and spilled they're guts all over the work bench fracturing a lot of the cubes and making a big mess a few weeks ago. Last night I heard a strange noise in the garage and when I went to investigate I found that the tumbler had tumbled itself off the workbench and onto the floor. Of course the barrel came open and scattered cubes beads and slurry all over the place. I scooped them all up, rinsed them off and set them aside for now. Don't know what damage, if any, was done to the tumbler. The strange thing is that I had checked my tumblers, as I do at least daily, about 3 hours before and everything looked OK. I think I would have noticed if one was about to viberate off the bench. I've never even seen any of my tumblers move from their original spot from rough to polish. Much less hop off the table in a span of 3 hours. Spooky.

Man, that sucks big time! What a mess - esp that slurry! Maybe you need to set the cubes aside for now and let the evil spirit abiding in them take itself somewhere else. BE's 15# Thumbler danced all over her bathroom until she boxed it in with some bricks. I think even after that, it danced off somewhere. Can't remember now what she did to keep it in place. Are you going to the SA Rock thingy? Who do I send my $5 if I get some stuff ready to sell? And when do I need to pay it? Got a couple of things ready and now that my hand is getting better, I hope to finish some more stuff. llana

Cubes in a tumbler. A cube is six sided, the cubes gather together and cannot tumble. This produces an off balance condition. In some cases, the cubes gather and release all of a sudden. With cubes, run a few with other stones. They have to move around. Nothing but cubes, and you have all the weight in one spot untill something changes. Good luck

Doc, the cubes are in with a lot of other stones of various shapes and sizes so I really don't expect that was the problem.
Shorty, I had the same thought that maybe a cat or some other animal became entangled and knocked it off and then made a quick and silent get away. Although I don't know of any animals being in my garage but you never know.
Cookie, thats the first thought I had last night. "OK everythings going on sale" But the feeling passed by morning. The word haunted also crossed my mind.
Llanna, yep I'll be there. I'm going to be out a little late the night before so I may not show up till around noonish. But I'll be there no doubt. As far as the $5 I would say just pay it when you get there. I'm going to a club meeting tonight if I hear any different I'll let you know. What's the matter with your hand? I'm sure it must be in a thread somewhere and I guess I missed it.

I think you should consider the possibility of sabotage. Have you been spending more time with your rocks than you have with wife, kids, friends...? No haunted tumblers, just someone trying to get your attention.
Either that or an extremely localized earthquake centered beneath your tumbler.

what if it is like that glass bottle with the ghost in it, and somehow when you sealed up the barrel, you trapped a ghost inside. yes thats it, that why it fell!! a ghost!!! every problem can be blamed on ghosts, you can't see them so they're easy to blame

I'm sorry Bob, that's such a bummer. How long have you been dealing with the cubes and just out of curiosity, was there a special reason you were doing cubes?

I awoke late one night to someone (something) banging on the door. However, when I came into the living room, I realized the banging was on the bathroom door instead of the front door. I thought about waking up my son so we could run away until I realized that the banging had a rhythm to it. I went to the bathroom door and tried to open it but it was blocked. I managed to push it open just enough to get my arm through, and then I was able, on hands and knees, to push my Model B away from where it was banging on the door. It had danced itself across about 3 feet of floor. No telling how far it would have gone given more cord and no door in the way. The wingnuts on the lid were what was hitting the door and they had even worn a hole in the door. The darn thing had never done that before. Maybe it was just dancing with a GHOST!
Sorry about your tumbler taking a dive off the bench, Bob. What kind of tumbler is it?

My Chicago Electric tumbler manual says: Do not put the tumbler on a table. The vibration of the unit may cause the tumbler to crawl when placed on a smoth slippery surface. Only use the tumbler in an extremely safe lacation such as a concrete garage floor. Maybe your tumbler wanted to be on the floor. It did not feel "extremely safe" on the bench. Just kidding I have my tumblers on a table in the garage. One of my tumblers has crawled twice lately, and ran into my other tumbler. I placed a rubber mat under it to keep it in place. You said the cubes ate a hole in the lid. What are you tumbling, Diamonds? ;D

I looked back at my first post which was after a week in 60-90 called "cubes first 60-90 run" and it was dated 8-29-04 so I probably cut them about a week or so before that. They were tumbling in a Thumblers AR-1. The lids on those units are pretty cheesy so I wasn't to suprized to see the rocks eat a hole in the lid. I had never used that lid before and didn't inspect it very well so it may have been almost worn thru to begin with. I just got carried away one Saturday night with my saw and cut a bunch of cubes and other geometricly shaped rocks and wanted to polish them. I believe it was James who posted some pics of some really beautiful cubes that he did. I was trying for that effect at first but when the cubes didn't come off the saw in perfect cubes I just started cutting different shapes. I never knew it was going to be like pulling teeth to get them thru polish.

ahahahahahahaha I can just see the tumbler dancing across the floor like a little zombie..."BRAAAAAAINS...must have BRAAAAAAINS!". Sorry to hear about the cube experiment going...um...mammary glands up. I was considering trying some myself, now I'm having second thoughts.

I think you mentioned having other odd shaped rocks in the load with the cubes, but maybe there were still too many. Perhaps just one or two cubes per load would work better. Frustratingly slow to get all your cubes done, but maybe its necessary.

That's what I've been thinking Shorty. A couple of deck screws should fix this problem right up.

agatehunter, thats exactly where my tumblers are, on the concrete floor of the garage. they have never moved even an inch, but they are only two 3A's and a 33B. i hear the bigger barreled tumblers tend to crawl more.
