Hope I'm not burning y'all out with my Verde trips. This past weekend we hit the river again for a nice over night outing. This time we headed down river of our usual haunt by several miles to the Childs/Verde Hot Springs area. It was quite a drive, some 20 miles of bumpy, bone rattling washboard roads, but very scenic and well worth it. Here's the view coming down the final stretch to the river And the view from our campsite After we set up camp, we had lunch and started the mile long hike up river toward the hot springs. Here's a link about the springs if you care to read it. It's a pretty neat place with a lot of history: www.verdehotsprings.org/Along the way we came across this nice boulder. We were about 3/4 a mile up and it was a good 50 lbs or so, so it got to stay put till next time The goal was to explore the area above the springs, but it's pretty rugged terrain and my sweety didn't want to cross the river so she stayed put while I forged on just a bit. I got into some pretty thick mesquites and some thorny-arsed 'rip you open' bushes, figured I better cross again and slipped into some unexpectedly deep water. I discovered that a bag of rocks gets substantially heavier when it's soaked LOL. Ended up going back down to the crossing where Christa sat waiting patiently under a big cottonwood tree, and after looking around a bit (and drying off) we hiked back down to camp. Next morning after coffee I crossed the river yet again and worked the gravel beds across from our campsite for a couple hours Afterwords we broke camp, had lunch and headed back home. It was a really nice weekend. Didn't find as much killer stuff as I had hoped, but I think this area has prolly been hounded pretty good over the last century. Here's our haul.. almost enough to fill the tailgate lol. These ones I busted out of a vein running through some massive volcanic rock.. I'm hoping the cuts will be nice Well, thanks a bunch for lookin'!

Great haul. It seems like there used to be a lot of rock there... Until you collected it all. I like the large loads you allways find. Well worth the trip. Jason

Nice rocks and nice location. I was vacationing in Arizona this past week, and we drove over the Verde river a couple times. Maybe if I'd taken out binoculars for a look I would have seen you splashing in the water! ;D -Don

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping to get in some cutting time here real soon. Hey John that sucks about the motor! Can't wait till you get your new one and slab up that baby Jason I've barely just scratched the surface down there.. heh Steve the Verde runs right through Cottonwood. Do you get out this way to visit her very often? Let me know next time you're passing through. I lived between Cottonwood and Jerome (Clarkdale) for a few years.. it's a nice area. Ed it was tough to leave that one behind. Hopefully next time I can zero back in on it and 'rescue' it lol Don I seem to remember seeing a car with Canadian plates zoomin' down the road throwing sparks everywhere 'cuz it was overloaded with rocks.. hmmm ;D

What a great place to play. Not only do I not get tired of your trip photos, but I enjoy seeing the vistas as well as the rocks. Nice haul. Good on you for taking advantage of your schedule and territory.

Very Cool indeed Brian. That campsite looks very firmilar. Is it at the south end of the campground. were tthe river gets faster and tighter? I think that was the spot i camped in the last time i was there. If you get to the otherside of the river, near the south end before the river gets fast. Up on that mesa is suppose to be some nice Sagenite one can find. And no pictures of the Hotsprings? The small hippy house with all the drawings everywere in it. OK, i understand, must been a bunch of naked people in it . lol That piece in the last photo does look plumish. thanks for sharing.

Thanks again everyone!
Shain, that's EXACTLY where we camped. I worked the opposite shore on Sunday and if I had known there was sagenite to be found up top that mesa... well.. I mighta found some LOL!
BTW you should see Fossil Creek.. er.. Fossil River running full tilt, deeper and clearer than it's been since Irving was set up a hundred years ago. I'll miss Stehr Lake but WOW! Whatta sight to behold!!

Very cool Brian, nice to see the spot hasnt changed in a long time. I bet, it a plan for this summer for sure. I personally also liked the creek over the lake. And remember when i was young my parents and their friends would tube the flute in some areas. Glad they restored the creek back to what it should be.
