I have always, as long as I can remember, collected rocks. When I was just a kid, my grandparents would go on trips and bring me back some rocks. I wish I would have labeled them as now I don't remember where they came from. My favorite piece is a section of a petrified tree that my grandfather brought back from New Mexico, I think. I still have it and would not cut it for anything. It has a great sentimental value now, maybe because my grand paw has passed. I guess it was just a cheap way of collecting souvineirs. Most of my family would bring me back rocks from their journeys.
When I was in high school, I collected more and learned more about what I was doing. I always wanted a tumbler, but they were too expensive and took too much time. I guess what really turned me onto tumbling was my trip to Arkansas this summer. We went crystal mining and gathered a bunch of crystals. When we returned home, I researched on the net information on how to clean them. I came across more websites for rocks and tumbling rocks that my interest grew. In August I bought a tumbler and am throughly enjoying it. Now I am looking into getting a saw, then a grinder, then, more tumblers........
Now, after seeing first hand the time and cost of tumbling, I am completely hooked. My son, 9 y/o, is also interested in rocks and loves the tumbler. All I have to do is keep tumbling and grow with this hobby. My wife and I are also looking into making jewelry. Guess it will all come in time.
This has been a great thread and is fun reading other's stories.
Thanks,
