WOW KD that was some life story! I loved the Supervisor of grounds- That is what I am- I mow the acre we have- and also mow my mother-in-laws acre of lawn- I plow(snowblow) the snow (and snowblow and snowblow) my drive but told my Mom-in-law that she would hve to hire someone (she leaves for work at 2 pm and gets back at 4 am- seems like last summer (rain rain rain) all I did when we had a nice day was to mow lawns! That and I cook outside (open fire) at least once a week (even in the winter).

Hey KD, it is funny how things work out. I did use to spend a lot of time on business in Elmyra, New York. I really kind of liked the area. I only ever considered two colleges when I was in high school. Because I intended to be a Mechanical Engineer, I was looking at GMI or MIT. I applied for GMI during my junior year at high school and was accepted, so that ended the debate.
Now, after a lifetime of promoting and furthuring technology, I have come to think more like Ted Kaczinski(?). If I had it all to do over again, I would have done things a lot differently. Before I decided to be an Engineer, I had considered applying to Oxford. With the war in Viet Nam, friends dying their, and the draft board tapping on my shoulder and saying, "Hey boy, you belong to us!", it was really hard to see things clearly. Mahatma Ghandi was my hero then (still is). I firmly believe in civil disobedience, and I went off to the Federal building in Detroit totally believing that I would end the day in jail, heading for the Federal Pen for two years for refusing induction. Lo and behold they said that I had extremely high arches and gave me a 4F rating. It was kind of like winning the lottery. I was willing to go to prison not for myself, but I firmly believed that if everyone refused induction, the war would be over. Kind of like, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
Sorry for getting sidetracked. I have to admit, I fell victim to the almighty dollar. At the time when I had considered applying to Oxford, I just couldn't see exactly how I was going to feed a family using that education. Obviously, I now see the error in my ways. Traditional education and traditional ways have become much more important to me. People need to take time to smell the roses in life, because life is a journey, not an end goal. Sometimes I think that God did me a favor when he made me sick. I see a world now that I never would have seen otherwise. I used to read one book a day, but they were mostly science fiction. Now my favorite authors are James Fenimore Cooper and Ernest Hemmingway.
I walk with a cane now, so I started making my own canes to make the best of that situation. Now I just need to find a way to do something for the times when I have to use a wheelchair. I'm not sure that I can carve a wheelchair out of wood. I have been contemplating making a pair of forearm crutches though. I had a pair custom made, but I still think that I could do better. Because of scarring in my brain, I have become much more right brain. That is why I find engineering harder to do and art earier to understand. I sing a lot now, I could not sing at all before. I always wished that I could sing. Now I tell people, be careful what you wish for, you might get it. In a way I feel kind of lucky, I got to be two people in one lifetime!
