How about a thread for pronouncing some of these rock names? Many of them, mookaite for example, are not in the Meriam-Webster online.
So, is it mook-ATE? MOOK-ate? mook-ITE?

Um... I usually just shorten it to Mook. I've heard it called moo-ka-ITE and moo-KITE. Then again, the "A" after the "K" is sometimes present and sometimes not, so I have no idea the actual official name of the stone anyway!

Um... I usually just shorten it to Mook. Hey, that's cheating We do the same with Latin names on my rainbowfish board. For instance Melanotaenia boesemani become just "boes" (bows), Glossolepis wanamensis become wanas, Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi become herbies and so forth. The Latin isn't commonly used, however, and there are a ton of commercial names. It's not a biggie to walk into a store and ask for "yellow rainbowfish", which are herbies or M. herbertaxelrodi. I believe it's Windalia radiolarite? I'd rather try pronouncing mookaite Eileen

I rather enjoy listening as people try to pronounce the rocks and generally butchering it all to hell. Makes me feel better knowing I'm superior to them. (tee-hee)

Dictionary.com gives pronunciation keys for most stones. It doesn't recognize mookite, though LOL If you pay a small fee, there is even an actual voice that pronounces the words for you.

Fuchsite <-- this should prove amusing
My guess on that would be Fyoo-shite, like mashing together Fuschia (the color) and -ite. But that's just a guess, don't think I've ever heard anyone actually pronounce it.
Most of the rest I've always assumed were pronounced about like they were spelled - Criss-o-cola and Criss-o-praise, Doo-more-tee-are-right [or Doo-more-tear-ite, with tear as in what comes from your eyes rather than as in a rip in fabric), Row-doe-crow-site, and Share-o-ite (for Chrysocolla, Chrysoprase, Dumortierite, Rhodochrosite and Charoite), for example. Also don't know if any of those are right either though, just assumptions. Now I'll have to go check out the talking dictionary myself and see... <grin>

Chalcedony=KAL-sid-knee sometimes KAL-sed-knee Charoite=CHAR-o-ite (CHAR like in BBQ) Chrysocolla=KRIS-o-cola Chrysoprase =KRIS-o-praze Fuchsite=FEWSH-ite or FEW-shite Pietersite=PETER-site Rhodochrosite=row-doe-KRO-site Sugilite=SUE-ji-lite ('ji', like in jib) I thought I had one or two to suggest but lost them. Hopefully I'll remember and post.

This website has audio pronunciations of mineral names. (You need Quicktime, which the website will install for you.) Find the mineral and click on the little 'speaker' next to the name. webmineral.com/Alphabetical_Listing.shtmlHope that helps. Later, jeri

Mookaite is so named for the location it is found. The rock is found near or on the Mooka Station military base, so to be correct, it is spelled with the a after the k.

Hello,
it`s really interesting for an Austrian, how do you pronounce some names of minerals. Such as fuchsite = fewshite. We in Austria say "fooxite" (oo like in room).
Best regards

Heck I mispronunciate most everything anyway ! *L* But then, I've heard so many ways to say all those mineral terms that I figure some smartypants is just making it all up anyway. I'm still trying to learn my Texican too ( Bexar=bear, Bourne= Bernie, Gruene = green) . It's all so confusing, so I'll just continue to say the rock terms the way they looks.....Mel

Dean has them right (must be right he says them like I do). I'm always amazed at the signs at shows with rock names spelled wrong. I think it is because people are so sure they are right it doesn't occur to them to check. Probably why so many use abbreviations.
