I picked up an old homemade 12" polisher the other day that was pretty basic. Polishing disc, shaft two bearings pulley, and motor mounted on two blocks of 4X4 and a piece of plywood. With this, I built a more usable polisher using scrap from the shop (I build small boats). Here are the pictures.

Scott asked how fast it turns. With a 12 inch pulley being driven by a 3 inch pulley, motor speed 1750 I have the polisher pad turning 437.5 RPM. This ain't no piano, but it did enough shellac to seal it. Hopefully this will be easier than polishing on the cab machine disc. It is bigger for sure. Woody

Rockitman: You should be able to cobber up something similar from the photographs. There is no metal machining (I do wood) so it really consists of a foot of shafting, two pillow blocks, two lock collars, a three inch pulley, a twelve inch pulley, one belt, one motor, one switch, a pipe thing to mount the twelve inch wood disc, a piece of leather, a piece of foam under the leather, and some scraps of wood to hold it all together. I got all the metal parts at a yard sale for $10.00. Woody

Put the shaft pulley in the middle, flip the motor around and you can put a second pad on the other end ;D I have perfect hindsight.

Man, you ARE a boat builder! The style of bracing gives it away. I'm sure that it looks a Helluva lot nicer now than when it was on a couple of 4x4's. Now I hope you're going to charge that leather pad with 14k and 50k diamond paste for your polish!

Beautiful work! I will make one similar. Only one thing I don't like about it. The polishing disc seems to set in from the edge of the plywood. This might make it a bit tough to polish larger pieces. I'm waiting on bearings for mine. I bought the stuff to make waterless polishing setup like Richardson's ranch uses. They will give you the nickel tour and sell you the stuff to make the same rigs they use.

437 RPM, try it for a while, I bet you change it to about 250 RPM. Just my feelings from the School of hard K-Knocks.
