I don't think it's granite. It's microcrystalline.

It looks kinda like Granite but I have never noticed that type of pattern. It looks almost like Dentrites in there Whatever it is, it's a whole lot prettier than most of the stuff I drag home Harley

I wonder if Granite can transition to something else or have other things going on in it, cause that looks granite like but I know what you mean. I find rocks on the beach all the time that I think are granite but have some properties that are not granite like.

Hmm, I'm thinking maybe a really nice compact metamorphosed quartzite. Sometimes the grains can be so crushed together and tiny so as to look almost like agate. Ie the Pagan River quartzites from the SE US. It actually does look more like a dendritic agate of some kind......Mel

It looks like granite . I think that has been slightly metamorphosed . Ted

That looks sort of like the pink, black, and white granite I was collecting when we stopped at the memorial plaque, on our way out to OHS. I included some of it in boxes I've sold, and I'm hoping to see pics of what it looks like once it's been made all purdy.

I don't think granite fractures like that -- conchoidal. We do have some strange mossy-type agate and agate-replacement types up here, I can say that.

Thanks! I can only take credit for posting the link, but I thought it was a pretty good overview. I'm hoping to take a lapidary class this spring. Chuck

Thanks for everyone's input! Chuck that's a cool PPt presentation!
I don't know if this helps at all, but here's a crappy video of the whole rock.

It looks so much darker in the photo than the pic...
It has all the markings of a volcanic rock on the outside, which rules out quartzite.
