OneWomanArmy ...... stated it perfectly ...
""I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. "
Voltaire
And yet .... at the same time .... I argue against the thought process of ...
"THIS IS (RTH) ROCK TUMBLING HOBBY LETS GET BACK IN FOCUS POLITICAL CRAP IS NOT WHY I JOINED THANKS"
We may be very focused/specialized in a very finite area .... However ... our finite area is effected by everything that goes on around us ... sadly ... that includes politics ...
The political arena has great effect on how we can or cannot HOUND for rocks.
It also effects how we can and cannot HOUND on (private) properties of massive structure without the local and/or county level government permissions.
Politics effects every facet of our lives. If we do not like how something is .... get off your butt, research the area of interest and write your local and statewide politicians. At some point they DO sit up and take notice.
That is usually when they are inundated with letters, emails, and phone calls.
As always Julie

Yep, leave it alone. I stay out of politics for the most part. I grew up with the men in the family yelling about politics over dinner, so today I still get a bad taste in my mouth over the bickering.
Let's start a new section on abortion, religion and racism and watch everyone delete themselves on a daily basis. Ha ha!

The politicing is pretty tame here. Some good discusion and banter. It's usualy labled well enough to be avoided if you wish. I like the various conversations because it lets us know more about each other, it's a little more personal.

Doesn't everyone enjoy getting in a good snit every now and then? Makes you feel alive. The board has provided a place for ventilating and if you can't stomach the posts, don't go there. I've only been on the board for a few months but I have come to have what I feel to b a fairly accurate mental picture of many of the members through their posts. I have come to respect the generosity, honessty, and caring of you folks to the point I can't conceive of any of you being mean-spirited or truly intolerant of onyone else. I would be delighted to have any of you (especially if you have a big saw) as a neighbor. It was suggested that religious content be be banned as well. When spirituality is such an integral and essential part of someone's character, denying it expression is is to disregard and devalue that person, and I can't sanction it. In the natural sciences, be minerology, geology, biology, or medicine one is invariably forced to acknowlledge the inconceivable as fact. Here, spirituality in whatever form it may take bridges the gap between reality and limited reason. It is wholly appropriate for spirituality to enter into discussions of the natural world. Even the closest friends and families can have disagreements. That doesn't mean they don't care about each other. So LEAVE THINGS AS THEY ARE.

By the way, why is there an ad at the top of this page for a movie "The God QWho Wasn't There"? i really hate these Ron Howardesque jabs at the foundations of mainstream religious belief. We need the values that religion has given us and I despise these ill written and mocking portrayeals of religious history., full of misrepresentations and fabrications for the sake of controversy and the money it can generate. Too many see these silly films and take their content as factual when they are no such thing. The existence of Jesus CHrist is established historically about as well as the existence of any historical figure can be. When Hollywood runs rough shod over the belief systems of so many, who have done so much good in the name of that system, these people have done something unspeakably obscene and disrespectful for the most selfish and malignant of reasons.

"these people have done something unspeakably obscene and disrespectful for the most selfish and malignant of reasons."
Unfortunately, many "religions" have done the very same thing, which is one of the main reasons that there are so many people who are "anti-religion". Ummm, but hijacking this thread for this discussion would be totally inappropriate.

MJ, I am not particularly churchy, but I respect what organized religion has done for our civilization. When it is hijacked for political reasons, problems arise. The history of the church (Catholic and protestant) is stained with atrocities, and if these incidents bear on current political and social events, they must be taken into account. What I protest against is the cheap, falsified portrayals of religion- and most religions are totally benign in their pure form- and rteflect the gompassionate and caring nature of those who follow them. Attacking a persons core beliefs without provocation or cause is inexcusable and divisive.

Mark, I need to ask after your condemnation of movies that show the church in a not-too-holy-light....
first, would you also ban movies that show politics in a shady light? Or any other subject for that matter. Why should religion be excluded from such movies.
Second regarding your comment "Too many see these silly films and take their content as factual when they are no such thing. " I would much rather see a ban of the people who cannot seperate truth from FICTION from the theatres than ban the movies. If someone cannot sepoerate the two, then I would rather they be banned...makes a lot more sense...

Jeff, I suggest you get your eyeglass prescription checked. I didn't suggest banning anything. Iwas poimtimg out the irony and hippocrrisy of discussing banning political and religious discussion while simultaneously the web sponsoring advertisers, whoever they are, are accepting ads for a film that is attacking deeply held and sacred beliefs for the sake of a buck. There are some things that should be respected if not personnally accepted, To do so using largely fictitious and often purely speculative plot lines is just plain rude and .unnecessarily provocative.

Mark, My apologies for making the error in judgement that you were discussing banning something, especially when in your first post on May 10, you continued the thread about banning politcal topics and spread it to include religion.... now how about answering the question.....

Sorry for not promtly respondingbut I've been away at a church retreat and book burning. Seriously, to be sequential, I did not suggest banning anything. I suggested some sensitivity to the belief systems of others. I attack only misrepresentation and speculation presented as historicl truth for selfish and trivial reasons. I i feel the same way about political "spin" in whatever context it appears. If facts that reflect negatively on religioous or political views are applicable to a given situation, they should be taken into account. They should not be used in a provocative manner to create controversy.
