i've been working on these for a while off and on, first up a small (14mm x 10mm) agate of some sort: this is an unknown 25mm x 18mm, kinda looks like a grateful dead album cover: this is (i think) Noreena jasper, 25mm x 18 mm, couldn't get a decent shine on this to save my life. pattern is neat tho. this is another type of jasper (i knew what is was, i just can't remember now, it isn't wonderstone.) again, almost no shine, but nice color and pattern (25mm x 18mm): a 14mm x 10mm mex lace: this was a mexican red hot nodule that i tried to cab (25mm x 18mm): now this BO was sent to me by Tony (nephrite) and this is the best BO i've managed to date, i'm rather proud of it! (it is over an inch long in the long axis) this is Pilbara Jasper i got off eBay, i have to stop buying jaspers that don't shine well: this is some "rare" chrysocolla that i got on eBay, looks like a summer meadow scene (30mm x 22mm): a 25mm x 18mm Sonora Sunrise jasper, i love this stuff! here are three 14mm x 10mm ovals of Lapis from a chunk that Amber sent me, they will make a nice set when finished: and last but not least a 40mm x 30 mm piece of flint. i didn't know what it was when i first got it, but i remember Mel saying it was flint. hard as garnet this darn stuff, but it cried out to be cabbed this way. anybody remeber the old TV Sci Fi series called "Time Tunnel"? thanks for looking! O, that last one does bring back memories of the Time Tunnel. That BO is a beauty. I love the colors and pattern in that Sanora and those Lapis cabs are going to make a gorgeous set.

Nice! I love that Polish flint too. Pattern almost makes ya dizzy! I have the same trouble as you with lots of those jaspers that are not really jaspers. Some are actually rhyolite or silicified sediments and are just a bit too porous to take that mirror shine. Varies a lot within the material too. Some pieces of Noreena shine up like glass. Think the nice red dendritic one is Apache Jasper from New Mexico, again not really jasper and it can be a booger to polish....Mel

KD, Wow some outstanding group of cabs you posted. You mentioned not getting a good shine on the Noreena Jasper. What are you using for a polish media?

As I progressed through the pictures, I kept thinking "I'll post this one as my favorite" but it kept happening again and again. I find ALL of them to be mesmerizing, with or without a glossy shine. The patterns, colors, and workmanship are all wonderful. I love them ALL! Susan

A great batch. I think I am most impressed with flint because I never knew flint could look like that. And to think I of all the flint I've wasted trying to get synthetic dryer lint to burn. It's a crying shame. (Dryer lint from natural fibers, great fire starter; dryer lint from synthetics, not so much).

Wow, KD! The boulder opal and the flint are works of art! I like them all very much but those two ones would eclipse anything else.

I've been having trouble with jasper recently, too. I guess there's no rule that says everything has to have a mirror shine. Some things look pretty with a smooth, matte surface.

Great group there KD. I remember that Time Tunnel series. Polish flint is hard but it is great to cab. I've cabbed some pilbari jasper and got a really nice shine using cerium oxide. That or tin oxide seems to work on all the jasper, agate or quartz that I've cabbed. That B.O. is my fave.
