Alice on your way through Edmonton, stop at Bedrock Supply. They have pans and a good book you should get call Gold panning Alberta. Bedrock is on 9435, 63 Ave. Argil road turns into 63 ave if you are coming in on the Yellowhead, take the 82nd ave exit. In Alberta you don't have to dig deep for gold. No more than 2 feet. If you find black sand you should find gold. Try the down stream inside of bend in the river or the up stream side of a bar. Big gold in Alberta is 10 mesh. The gold is very pure almost 90%. You need a license to pan in Alberta, but this is not enforced unless you go to a bigger operation like slucing, and then you have to play by the rules with settling ponds etc. A metal detector will find the black sand but not worth the time to lug it down to the river. Take fishing rods for the kids, they will have a blast with the Pike, walleye, perch, goldeye, trout, ling cod,Mt.whitefish and suckers. Just use worms or minnows for bait on a pickerel rig.

You only need a licence if you are mechanized bushman. Recreational panning you can just go for it. Here is the government web page on it. The recreational bit is near the bottom. Might need it for a sluice though. www.energy.gov.ab.ca/minerals/704.asp

I didn't think there was a license requirement. Alberta has a gold panning club. There was no mention of a license. There's even gold panning crash courses. Besides, I doubt they would bust a couple of kids holding pans.
I gotta ask. What is a sluice? Isn't that just the mud that you're washing away? like slurry in the barrel?

oh ok. I wasn't really thinking of getting anything like that. Just wanted to get a couple of pans for the kids to keep them occupied. They're the ones that have gold fever LOL I am preparing them for not getting their hopes too high. I am explaining that they may not find anything for the first summer, but not to give up.
I told them that we could go every weekend if they wanted to. Then the question came up "what if it's raining". I told them that we could go by the river with buckets, fill them up and then bring them home. If we do the bucket thing, what's stopping us from getting a motorized thinggy? nobody would know we have it in a garage, would they?

If you are going to pan for flour Gold you might want to get yourselves a couple BLACK colored pans, they are a little smaller than the Green ones but the material shows up better and they are much easier to use when you have SMALLER hands. The E-bay bidding usually starts at $1.00 to $2.00 on most of them. A couple or three pans and a snuffer bottle are all you need and a demo video on You-tube and your good to go. Let the young ones practice with a pan full of sand and a couple small lead shot. With the price of Gold being what it is, it doesn't take a whole lot to make gas money home !

another question that popped up... Suppose we find a few grams of flour gold. Who will buy it? Will we have to explain where it's from, and then expect a fraction of the price of what it is actually worth?

For nuggets you will have to go into BC. As for selling, just about any jeweler will tale it off your hands

I saw a couple nuggets out of the north saskatchewan but I never found one. I actually find the green easier to see flour gold on than the black (I have both) maybe its just personal preferance. Harley is right about the size though the green one holds a lot more than a round black pan so much more weight. If you get a round pan make sure it has built in riffles, they make it easier.
The link to the kit didn't seem to work.

Dawson Creek is 1 1/2 hours away from Grande Prarie. Or do we need to go in up and over the rockies? I don't think I'd make a trip over the rockies within the next few years. Maybe by then the kids will have gotten over their gold fever LOL I'm checking out the alberta map. The peace river forks. One side is the peace river, and the other is a very windy Smoky river. Is it right to assume the smoky river is also a good spot? I'm looking into getting a few black pans for the kids. Think we can get one of those miniature blow torches and melt all the "dust" into a small nugget? With the kids handling it all the time, it wouldn't surprise me if it spilled all over the floor. Would a jeweler accept it if it was melted together? Kids are driving me nuts these days. All they can talk about is gold gold gold

Just be aware you've dug up an old thread. Alice was last online on 17 September 2015 so don't expect a reply anytime soon. There's always a chance though.

Looks like we're moving to Northern Alberta this summer (6 hours north of Edmonton). Does anyone know if there's anything worthwhile up there, rock wise? There's a lot of oil drilling up there, that's all I know. They mine diamonds up there.
