*New information below on contents of post(for general viewing) and desired/missing material.
For anyone who still has stuff to share - Please- Drag out your Utah material! Share with the world!
We are starting this project with a request for images of material (agate/jasper) from the great state of Utah. Any material posted here will be considered for inclusion into the database. (We only need a couple images for each specimen type - so if we receive more than a few, only a couple will be published.)
If you have any that you're willing to share, please post with a brief note on the region and its common name (if it has one.) Credit for the photo will be assigned to your name or online title (or not at all if that's your choice.)
Current material (listed by provider, location - specimen.) by SteveHolmes (beautiful specimen!) Dugway by Mel Heber - Red Horn Coral Black Horn Coral Hanksville - Coprolite San Rafael Swell - Oyster Agate Delta - Black Agate Dugway Region - Amethystine Lace Agate Moab - Agated Barite Nodule Brianhead - Moss and Dendritic from Lori (sitnrap) Dugway Geodes from Lowell (elementary) Klondike Bluffs - agate San Rafael Swell - nodule, possible coprolite Moab(?) Any material that fits under the heading agate/jasper is welcome to be posted here, even if it is from lesser known locations. A sample of some of the better known agates/locations we're hoping to have provided are: grape agate from thompson region Kanab flame agate golden swirl agate from near Levan St. George/Central - white agate geodes agate from Yellow Cat locality agate from the Cisco region agate from the Hanksville region agate from the San Rafael Reef region but it doesn't have to be just these places. There are dozens of places I've not mentioned that would be readily known to people outside the state. We'd love to see sample of these. If in doubt, POST!
In two weeks I'll have an initial file to see what works and doesn't.
Thanks all!

This is soo flippin' COOL! Thanks Lowell. Dugway Geode, Utah Juab County Most Dugways are filled with crystals. This is one I found and was totally suprised when I cut it. It will stay in my personal collection. Out of 100's of Dugways I've cut, I've never found one quite as pretty. Steve

OK Lowell, Spent the morning dragging out some Utah stuff and taking some new pics. I'm actually pretty weak on Utah, mostly collected obsidian and pet wood on my trip. Anyway, I have a few more but I have to wait till it gets dry to take more pics. Here's a beginning: Red Horn Coral from the Woodland area NE of Heber, Utah. My camera got weird on this one and left out some background. You should be able to crop it out but if you can't let me know and I'll reshoot. Black Horn Coral. The guy I got this from would only say its from a roadcut in the same region as the red. You may want to exclude this as its only silicified on the outside. Inside is calcite soft: Coprolite from south of Hanksville in SE Utah: Oyster Agate: These flattened shell shaped nodules are from the San Rafael Swell area near Green River, Utah: Another San Rafael Swell area nodule cut the other direction: Black Agate from Delta, Utah. Moss inside resembles Horse canyon but the exterior of all the nodules is dead black: Amethystine Lace Agate, Topaz Mtn. range near Delta, Utah This was collected by a dealer I get a lot of my rare stuff from and they did not tell me the purple color was fugitive. I should have known better. Hence, the purple faded to gray.

Just a few more Lowell: Agztized barite nodule ( pseudomorph) from Moab , Utah Couple of Brianhead, Utah specimens. SW Utah ski area. Tough to do Brianhead because there are a lot of types of material at this location. I've got a lot but most is in rough form. Brainhead Dendritic Agate Brianhead Moss:

Although this doesn't necessarily help with the project, here some additional specimens: www.worldofjaspers.com/Utah.htmlI made a trip to Utah this Fall and picked up a lot of rock. Unfortunately, it's all still rough. I'll try to contribute as I get things cut and polished, but it will take a while given all of my other commitments. Chuck

Chuck, If you want to save time and still get a usable pic just take pics of slabs wet. Takes forever polishing flats before you photograph them....Mel

Thanks Steve and Mel for being the first to post. I'll have my meager Utah items up soon.
Chuck, I'd love to have pictures of rough material (and wet slabs) as not every piece we (as collectors) come across has been cut. Having pictures of material in multiple forms (rough, cut, polished, cabbed) just provides us a better chance of identifying unknowns. I'll take anything at this point to work with and begin the project.
I'm in the process of contacting a few rock shops in Utah that have advertised on line with photos. I'm thinking of offering a space for their logo at the end of the file in exchange for free use of their on line images. They get publicity and we get a broader and deeper collection of photos to use.
Thanks to all for your support!
Lowell

Lowell, Steve Holmes sent me these a while back and I believe that they are Geode Dugways with the crystal pockets. He will probably know the exact location also. I hope you and Mel can use them in this amazing project. Lori

Here are a few from my bucket. I'll update with polished specimens as they occur. (And yes, you've seen a couple of these before, but they are at home here.) *I have Dugway, but nothing that works as well as those already submitted. Klondike Bluffs, (Told near Moab by friend who collected them. Will verify.) From San Rafael Reef area. (Mel identified.) Possible coprolite material Pigeon Blood agate - according to book, from near Moab. (anybody give a better location?) I've also seen Pigeon blood on line with a clearer backdrop to the red spots. I don't think I have any more material at present. I am going to my local clubs to see what material they have. Our Gem/Mineral Show is in March, and I'll be looking for specimens there to photograph (dealer permission and displays). Lowell

Lowell: Pigeon Blood Agate is more of a pattern type ( usually red bloodlike droplets of color in clear to pinkish agate )rather than a type from a particular location. Kind of like Bloodstone which is found in several places and is basically green jasper with red spots. Pigeon blood agate is round n several area of Utah so you could actually list Pigeon Blood Agate: Brianhead, Utah, Moab, Utah, Green River, Utah, Hanksville, Cisco etc etc....Mel

Mel, Thank you! Keep me honest! I'm not the expert here - so I appreciate any corrections. The description you give is the one I've seen most, but there have been a couple photos with material similar to what I've posted labeled pigeon blood. It also explains why the Western Gem Hunter Hunter's Atlas switched sites for where this was found between editions. So - How would you list the above material? Pigeon Blood, Utah, specific site unknown? Or drop the material from the Index as too undefined for our goals? Thanks as always for your guidance.
Lowell

Here's a question that might help - is Pigeon Blood found anywhere else than Utah, and if so, is it still called Pigeon Blood? Is it as general as "fortification agate" or more like "Missouri Lace" where it's only found in one state, but multiple areas of the state?
If it's really only found in Utah, I'd say it belongs in the AgateJasper project. But that's just my take on it!

Lowell, Unless you know the exact location, I'd say yours looks like Utah Pigeon Blood to me so I'd just list it under the general heading of Utah. I've seen varieties from Arizona and New Mexico too so if I was to see one from those areas, I'd just say Pigeon's Blood Agate, Lake Valley, NM or something like that. Just separate them out by location....Mel

This material is located in Snowville, Utah...Box Elder County. No longer open to collecting Coprolite (Dino Poo) Shooterang Canyon in the Henry Mountians Turritella This material was found in Honeyville, north of Brigham City, Utah...Box Elder County Pigeon Blood Agate (another pic) Picasso Picture or Marble Jasper. I believe this was mined somewhere near Milford. I used to have lots of this stuff...but I think I gave it all away. Barite nodule. Outside structure. Found in the Yellow Cat area, Crescent Junction near Moab. If the sun comes out today...I'll get some more pics. Thanks Lowell. Steve

Lowell, That about finishes me up for those three states. I'm pretty weak in those regions. I do have a few dino bone slabs labeled Utah but they could be from elsewhere too. Maybe Steve can photograph some bone he knows is from his state since it's his backyard *S*. If not, let me know and I'll snap a few more pics.....Mel

Thought you might like a couple of pics of rough agate from the Brainhead, Utah beds. These are sort of brecciated examples.
