This stuff is new to me. A few weeks ago I was chatting with Ken Dull from West Coast Mining and he had some interesting Obsidian. He has seen my case a few times so he knows my obsession with Obsidian. He mentioned that he had some Obsidian with red streaks at home so I arranged to meet him at the next show and he said he would bring his material. Well, I went there and bought all that he had. Unfortunately this stuff is rather rare so all he had was 5 small slabs (about 1-1/2" in the long direction) and a piece about twice that of a hen's egg. He said it came from a few seams near the Fire Obsidian location at Glass Buttes. Here is the first (and best) slab made into a cab. It is 1-1/2" tall. Here is the rough piece with a face polished. You can see the red ribbon layers in it. Anybody like it? Bob

This material from my experience is called flame obsidian. You are correct it comes from Glass Buttes, across the road on the hillside from the fire pits. It is great material and makes great pieces.

Naw, I don't like it Bob, better send it to me so you don't have it cluttering up your shop

Wow!! Incredible stuff! Is the outside of that rough silver, or is that just the lighting?

Mike, The outside has a white crust that resembles a calcium buildup like you would have on your faucet. Jason, From my obsidian references they say Flame Obsidian is another name for Fire Obsidian; however, those sources do not list a Red Ribbon Obsidian as a variety, either? ?? Bob
