the preshaping is a good idea. i just started doing it with a batch i have in the rough right now. i can see that it will cut at least a week off of my rough stage. i use a dremel with the grinding stones that come with it. i bought an expensive diamond bit and wore it out on about the 7th stone. not sure if there is a bit that lasts longer as i am new to the dremel.
