Nice specimen. Looks to have some well defined crystals faces. Did you get any other cool things from the estate?
What makes you suspect it's an NC emerald? It's looks like nothing I have seen from the crabtree(save for a few old mine specimens from the 60's), it's on matrix so not a typical Adams farm that I know of, the matrix looks nothing like those from the NAEM mine that I have seen. Looks like a typical brazilian specimen to me. Might want to post it under the "identity section" on the mindat discussion forum for a decent educated guess(from a picture)

Jason, the reason I suspected N.C. is because I was cruising ebay, (obviously not the best place to get info), and saw a smaller specemin that looked very similar.
Ed, I am thinking that it is galena? Not sure though...taking a crash coarse on Emerald Habit.

Definately not NC emerald. Jason is right. I have been going to the Crabtree mine since the late 60's. It is brazilian. Color is close to Columbian, but it is not. It is mica that gives the metalic flash. Ken

This is an emerald in matrix from China I'd like to sell. had it up on ebay but no bids, I guess people were skeptical about the low price. btw, this pic is thru a 10x loupe.

Christopher that is just beautiful. I went hunting Emeralds in NC and of course didn't find much, just small ones but I can tell you I would have been jumping with joy if I found something like that.

That is what I am learning also, that this is most likely Brazilian. Now I just need to figure out if it is worth more cut up or as is. I am itching to cut it!!!! I keep having to stop myself. I am waring within......just a little piece my mind keeps telling me.....oh the struggle... ;D

Chris, cut it. They turn out superb. I have cut a lot of the NC emerald and have never been dissatisfied. It is basically the same. Use the matrix along with the emerald. Looks like about a $50 piece. Just my guess. Cut and polished you will tripple your value. Got a knife on 'Creations' with an emerald from NC, somewhere. Ken P.S. I would coat it in epoxy first before cutting as it looks fractured pretty much. May fall apart on you. Doubt you can get a piece out to facet. I could be wrong as I am just going by your pictures and my experience cutting NC emeralds.

Darn I thought I would get a little more than $50 for almost 1 3/4 pounds of rough emerald

If you want to see something amazing in Tucson, just go the the strip west of I-10. One of the hotel shows has a back lot with truck loads of rocks on pallets and a guy running a gas powered forklift. They have sacks of the brazillian emerald. It is really cheap , maybe $3 per pound. This is emerald in matrix. It's what most of the bucket / sluice pay mines salt their dirt with.
And they have pallet after pallet of this material. A croker sack breaks and spills emerald on the ground? No biggie, they just take an empty pallet and use the fork lift to "bull doze" that emerald right out of the way as waste material.

I looked but didn't see any pics on facebook of your emeralds. How big are they? Where did you get them from? What would make you think colombian or the other place? Can you post pics here?

Jason,
I went to mindat like you suggested and the consensus there was Brazilian and I also researched a bunch and from all that I looked at Brazilian fits. Now to be 100% I imagine that some analytical testing would be needed.
Rodney,
Do they sell crystals as big as these for $3 a pound? They range from 1.25" to .25" around and 5" long on this specimen.
