Since I bagged a turkey Friday, I took Abigail rock hunting today. It wasn't anything extravagant, just a walk about the farm I found the coral at earlier this week. We spent about an hour looking over the rock piles that are everywhere along the fence lines at that place. It's mostly limestone, but a few nice ones pop their heads up once in a while. Abigail even found a big piece of quartz, but it was pretty heavy and too big for my equipment (probably bowling ball size), so we left it there. So enough blabbering, here's what we brought home. Any help with I.D.s is appreciated: Group shot The other coral (shown wet) that I didn't grab Tuesday Is this a sponge? I'd love an I.D. on this one. It's quite light. broken side Gneiss maybe? Smaller gneiss? Puddingstone - I've never seen anything like this around here! No idea what this is. Limestone and something. I'm going to research it with Abigail same one wet A piece of limestone Abigail thought looked like picture jasper A little pudding stone type of piece. Is that little quartz pieces in there? I'm gonna have to look closer at it. Maybe hornfels Lastly is my favorite for the day. Abigail picked this up out of the dirt in a wheat field as we walked back to the jeep. I'm not positive, but I think it's pet wood! I can't wait to push some of these through the saw! Thanks for looking! Nate

geez did someone own a rock shop on your farm before you moved in ...lol nice rocks .. Thanks Greg. Too bad that's not my farm, I just got permission to hunt on it. I know if I stopped back to ask to rock pick, they'd probably be more than happy to let me. That one in the middle is chapstick if i'm not mistaken, hehe Ever heard of chapinite? ;D Dry rock humor right there lol. Thanks guys... Where's Ted, I'm still looking for ID's Nate

I agree on the pet wood. THe light sponge one looks a lot like Pumice- but what the heck it would be doing in a Wisconsin field is beyond me (it weathers away very quickly). THe pudding stone is a typical glacial conglarmerate- cool to look at- A bugger to polish. Nice Turkey BTW! We have a HUGE Gobbler that runs through our yard every couple weeks- Beard has got to be 8" and spurs at least an inch and a half (heck you know their big If I can spot them while hes running!)

Well its looking alot like rocks from here . I see it still looks like march up there in the photo of you with your turkey , glad you got one ! That coral looks like the other one kinda , there is something about it though ,have to wait till you cut it , looks like it may have some colors in there too . hard to say on the sponge , could be , could be pumice too , it is weathered , have to wait till you cut it too . Third is definetly chlorite schist , also called greenschist ,should be attractive . fourth is a quartz , biotite , maybe hornblende ,orthoclase feldspar, maybe others - gneiss . Fifth looks like a conglomerate . Sixth , is a igneous pophyry , probably dark green - chlorite , and white - orthoclase feldspar . Abigails limestone ,may be dolomite . keep a lookout for these , they can be very picturesque - picture dolomite . Eighth is quartz porphyry . Ninth is speckled or oolitic hematite , also called ironstone , a very good cab material ,depending on the quality of the specimen . Last one , looks like, petwood !!! ive found none like that here , so dont know the species , great find hope there is more .

Stefan, sounds like a nice bird running around your place. Have you named him yet? ;D I've been hunting these guys for 12 yrs, and this is only my 3rd one. The last one I got was 6 yrs ago and just by chance. I fell asleep in my blind, and woke up to a pack of jakes walking right up to me lol. I was hunting 2 hrs away from home, and wasn't wanting to make the trip home empty handed, so Bang... hunt's over. I really enjoy seeing them strutting in the fields, and bagging one is just icing on the cake. I wish I could talk my wife into letting me use her digital SLR. I would be just as happy with pix. These birds were never around when I was a kid, so it's a real treat to see them now!

Thanks for the ID's Ted, sounds even better when the correct names are attached! I'll have to talk to the farm owner, and see if it's ok to rock pick out there again sometime. There's also a small ridge poking out on the next farm. I'll have to find who the owner is of that one and go poking around if they'll let me.
Yes the trees weren't hardly budding until late last weekend. Where I was hunting all that had buds were honeysuckle and willows.

Named him? Well if he keeps it up I'm gonna name him Thanksgiving Dinner (just kidding). Nah he is a beatiful bird- kinda surprised noone has nailed him yet as we have plenty of hunters around. Course they don't get that big by being stupid. I used to hunt these guys- but never had any luck. Seems Turkey season and Gnat season are open at the same time- so I pretty much avoid the woods this time of year.

Stefan, turkeys have very little sense of smell, load up on the bug spray and you're good to go! Maybe he'll hang around all summer, and you can get a tag and hunt him in the fall.
