well i had to go in search of this answer toad as i'd missed the posts. seems like we lost 2 fine members - hermatite and earthdog both deleted their membership over the "big boned" woman in the mirror. i'm sure sorry to see that as both offered a lot to this board. i hope they will both reconsider.

Sad and frustrating business. RTH is usually has such camaraderie.
Meeting with common interest is always a tricky proposition. I want to be here and share my lapidary enthusiasm with other RTH members. The range of folks from rockhounds, to tumblers, to cab makers, to wire-wrappers ... etc is a great mix. The focus on advice and show-n-tell instead of commerce is great too.
Once we go beyond rocks, we are almost certain to find that we have very different sensibilities, political views, patriotic notions, and modes of expression. I think it takes a willful effortful choice to focus on the common interest and not to pursue or react to the other stuff.
I'm sure there are folks here who would become my best buddies if we lived on the same block. There are likely others who I would cross the street to avoid for fear of getting into an unpleasant argument. I think most issues are more complex than folks usually grant, and trying to point out the complexity usually gets you snapped at from both sides. When I read remarks on RTH that strike me as too course, too politically correct, too gender-insensitive, ageist, too liberal, too conservative, too fundamentalist, too homophobic, or too close-minded, I try to focus on the common interest in rocks. Maybe I voice some carefully worded support for a moderate voice in the thread, or give a hint of complexity to be considered, but usually I just move on. I have to say that the "everything" section is the one I read least often.
This is what works for me.

i am very sad to lose both valuable members of the RTH over a silly cartoon. i agree with Kim and hope they both reconsider and come back on board.

Like Deb193, the "everything" section is the one I view the least. Generally don't have time to get there - barely find time to read the "rocks" sections and that's what I'm part of this board for! Sure hope Earthdog and Hermatite will come BACK to the board. Would be a real shame to lose their knowledge and the simple pleasure of reading their posts!

Unfortunately, everyone seems to be too "politically correct" these days and people take things way too seriously. Lighten up and laugh instead. It feels a lot better (and is much healthier) than being mad and upset and offended over little "doo-doo". I'm overweight and I can only blame myself for it. I like cooking and I eat too much and I don't exercise. Period. It's my fault. If I can't handle a fat joke or a dumb blonde joke or a woman joke, I just click out of the thread, or change the TV/radio station, close the magazine, etc. and don't go back there. Every joke that has ever been made up is making fun of something or someone. Yes, there are some extreme sex jokes that I don't like. And I don't care for bathroom humor. So, I will just not view it or listen to it. Maybe RTH needs to set up a "jokes only" topic, and then have sub-topics, such as G, PG, R and X-rated jokes. That way if you aren't into into certain kind of jokes, stay out of that thread. It's that easy. That should help cut down on animosity between members. Yes, this is a "rock" hobby forum. And 95% of the discussions on here is about or related to rocks. But it is nice to be able to discuss other things with people that you have a common interest in. That way, you might get to connect with someone else that has other hobbies/interests in common; but if you are only allowed to talk about rocks, you'll never find that out. Earthdog may or may not come back.....I don't know. He didn't leave because he was offended. He left because he's tired of the "doo-doo". He can dish it out, but he can also take it, more than most people I know! Most people post jokes so they can make other people laugh. That's all he was doing. If your self-esteem is so low that you think every joke is about you, then you better look into therapy. Life is so much better when you can laugh at it. Unfortunately, life can throw you some "doo-doo" and it can be very tough to deal with it. Chose your fights. Getting upset and offended over a lousy joke is pretty trivial. I would rather have to listen to a bunch of offensive jokes than lose a loved one before their time or have to deal with an incurable disease. Think about it..............

But, is leaving the answer? Is the fight so bad that they had to leave? Were they the offended ones or the offendee's? And why the heck do we have an "Everything Else" page to begin with? There are other sites that have all of that type of crap that a website dealing with rocks, tumbling, cabbing, slabbing, geology, etc etc just doesn't need the additional headache! Like 99% of the membership here I just don't have the time to even read the other pages that don't have to do with the General rock stuff, the member venders, the Lap Tips, the Rock ID's and the Members pics to even start dealing with the "Everything else" page. Hell, I have my dad to send me the offensive politically incorrect jokes if that's what I need to get through a day. I say get rid of the page and if they really need a page like that let them start another web site! Leave this one to ROCKS, ROCKS, and more ROCKS!! And if Edog and the other that left DIDN'T post the whatever it was, then why are they the one's who left? It won't affect the leaving or the staying of anyone else. And like most other adults here know, that if something does offend your sensibilities, then turn the page, change the channel, turn off the machine, take a walk, but don't quit. Don't let the other side win. The only one who loses is you. And those who depended on you for your knowledge, generosity, and kindness. And they won't leave either. Well, that's my two cents and now....it's time to go look at another forum....like the Rock ID page. I have a jasper looking like stone that's an odd shade of green with small brown dots that are barely visable....hmmmm...I wonder if anyone has posted a picture of one like this.

Ditto to what takilasunrise wrote. I've gotten to know about other members here, because of the life, universe, everything else forum. For example, I know quite a few people now who have the same warped sense of humor as myself! LOL! I've gotten to know two members here only because they interpreted one of my posts as offensive. Had I left the forum instead of PM'ing them, I would have lost two good friends. Sometimes facing what hurts you can keep you from losing out on something else that's even better.

Yeah what a way to start my Monday! If I left everytime I got offended by something someone says I'd have only been on here 15 minutes. I'm sorry feelings got hurt, but that was not the intention of the post and folks damn well know it.

I have to admit, there are times when the minor dramas and some grating personalities on the board tempt me to go elsewhere as well because even reading it grows tiresome and annoying. Having that drama then directed at you - which I haven't yet - would probably make me react the same way as Earthdog. I have more than enough drama in my regular life to not need it in my hobby-life as well.
Unfortunately, these dramas and overreactions are part and parcel of online interaction. You can't escape them and interact in a cyber world. In fact, this board is pretty tame compared to others I visit. If the value of the interaction no longer outways your tolerance of snarky comments and dramatic outbursts, then it's time to at least take a break.
Has this been a long enough break, Earthdog and Hermatite?

It's all a plot by Andy. He just found out a board with over 1000 members has to pay more to Google. RTH is currently at 1036, so some shedding has to take place.
Any more volunteers?
Rich . . . . . (whether you like it or not, I'm stayin')

Heck, we probably have at least 200 members with no posts...
(I wonder if they realize they can still read the board without becoming a member...)

A lot of good points on all sides. Lets be careful not to chastise any parties. Lets not make it sound like Herm was too sensitive and left for no good reason and Edog only left because he was tired of "poo-poo". I mean one person's poo-poo is another person's issue.
I assume Herm had more issues than just the mirror, an I hope she comes back, but I don't think of Edog or the mirror as exactly *why* she left. Maybe it was a series of jokes and interactions. Maybe it was also other issues in her life right now. We can't know for sure.
I also note that Edog sorta knew the mirror might have been on the edge, and might have been provocative. Someone suggested he was "brave", he said "no, just dumb". Also, his signature pretty much said to stay away from the topic of rear ends - which might have been good advice to follow. So, it is fair to wonder if he was being enough of an imp that some stirring things up - beyond a good laugh - was not intended. Here too, we can't know for sure.
Personally, I wish folks would just voice concern, or not log in for a while, rather than deleting themselves. I guess they feel they need to make a statement, but it does throw out the baby with the bath water.
Here's hoping everyone returns and talks about rocks.
