So I find myself in Helena Montana. Not sure if I will have the time but if so, anyone know a nearby place to go surface collecting? Would love to pick something up while here.
Barring that, any good rock shops in the area?
Thanks!
Erik

"The Rockhound's Guide to Montana" by Robert Feldman...........A great book with maps and locations for all Montana rockhounding........(On my second book now)... Mostly sapphires around the Helena area........Could walk the creek and river areas too........Always something around the waters...Good luck..

Too many pages are no longer active on the internet. Sadly, this link is also dead. Thanks Jake.

Thanks Fossilman! Looking forward to the rivers being lower than they were earlier this month! Water everywhere was higher than we have ever seen!
SK, AB, B.C., WA, OR & MT - The water levels were all at high points. (This was our first time traveling through ID, which we are looking forward to returning to next year!).
Water levels are starting to drop in our neighbourhood (finally). But from my experiences in the past, levels drop off here first then it takes a week longer for the levels to drop off in northern MT & ND. Of course this is mainly for the Red River / South Saskatchewan rivers.

Hello Erik - I know I may be a little late here for you. The last time I visited Helena, ( some years ago, now ), I made it a point to meet, visit and speak with the Rock & Gem Club President. He lived in Helena. The President was a first class welcoming committee & ambassador for Rock & Gem enthusiasts etc. He invited us over. Pick up numerous rocks & samples that he offered from his back yard. His collection and knowledge of the area was outstanding. He was an avid collector and his knowledge of current places in the area to collect was above an beyond what you will find in the Manual. The club was full of very courteous and helpful individuals. If you have the time, take the time to visit The President, or any of the other club members and you Will Not come away disappointed.
Please don't misunderstand me - Rockin around Montana is very nicely done and will help you! Good luck & keep us posted how you made out. IV
