I was going to suggest tiffany stone, but I'm not so sure if that's what it is. I say take a slab from it and see how it cabs.

not sure if it is calcite, but could be, knife scratches it. the purple is slightly harder, but knife scratches it , so hardness is more like 4 to 5

I would guess Bertrandite. I have some that is about that hardness and color. It is just a guess though.

Have you tried a streak test yet ? I'm thinking possibly purpurite. At least the hardness is right.

Looks just like a piece of fluorite my husband has. If I can get a shot of it this evening, I'll post it.

Yeah Don , purpurite has a similar color , i got a white streak, but streak does`nt work to good for rocks compared to pure mineral . i was a bit suprised by the white though,dumortierite has a white streak . dont know about purpurite.

It's either opalized fluorite (Tiffany Stone) or fluorite/silica admixture, as Sue alluded to above... I'm now thinking mine is Tifany Stone as well... we'll post a pic this evening
Any idea where it's from?

That does look the same as mine ,but lighter . where is yours from?
