Blarney had the decency to let his forum know what was up when he closed his site. Given Zarguy’s explanation, this was a chickenshit move. Been lurking for a bit to see if this is the right atmosphere/place for me. This comment is a real disappointment. Ever stop to think what event in your life could cause you to drop something you love so much so fast? For me it would have to be HUGE and having been a regular on Gemstones, I thing it would have had to be the same for George.

Perhaps what happened to George was akin to getting run over by a bus. I spoke to him on the phone & he didn't sound in good spirits. He didn't say what changes caused him to pull the plug on rocks & the sites. Just "health & family".
I'm glad someone will be able to somehow continue the forum. Thanks.

I'm glad the site is back up, thank you Aaron! I remember a few weeks ago thinking that George wasn't posting very much and I wondered why. I also remember short statements from him regarding his loved one suffering from a horrible medical condition. I pray that she didn't take a turn for the worse. My thoughts and prayers are with George and his loved ones.

Thankfully the forum is back up and running as smoothly as possible given the changes that it has gone through. Maintaining a forum is a lot of work without many rewards. If he has some personal issues with illness within his family it is understandable that he can't continue to devote so much time to the forum and neglect his home issues. Take care George! Bob

I am very glad the forum is back up. I made so many friends there, and made so many connections with folks in the lapidary world. Without George there is so much I would not have done.
I wrote a letter to George and put it into a card that I then sent off to him last week. I posted it on Gemstones for everyone to read. I've been told that it was heartfelt and everyone appreciated me writing it.
Aaron and Mark: Thanks for taking over the reins and keeping alive what George started.

The parent site is down, so all forums hosted at smfforfree.com are down, not just gemstone. Maybe smfforfree went belly up and didn't bother to tell anyone?

I found this, some kind of legal battle: www.smfsupport.com/support/announcements/smf-for-free-all-sites-down/____ Bad news their decision is final to pull the drives. It will be at least 3 to 5 days for sites to be back. There will be some data loss. Posts and topics are safe as of right now. But attachments, changes to styles, pictures made since 12/30/2015 will be lost for sure. Custom domain users we will have to change the ip address for your sites. I am moving everything away and this probably cost me tens of thousands of dollars to complete disaster. ___

There was a dust up on the site last year when Taogem took over the site after being absent for some time. A lot of the older members pretty much abandoned it,unhappy with the situation. It never seemed to be the same many were extremely talented to bad. I saw this happening but thought it would have been sooner.

The forum will be back as soon as the legal troubles of the parent site is sorted out. The forum isn't down because of any internal drama with the members.

I don't know all of the details, nor will I ever presume to. However, this seems to be the time to realize that we owe website administrators, and their support folks, rather than beat up on them for perceived failures to meet our immediate needs. Thanks to them much interaction has occurred, relationships built, and information exchanged. Just because they don't meet all of our needs does not mean that they do not deserve our gratitude, and respect. Nuff said. Tom
