I guess that you'd call this a polisher.
I usually use my diamond paste charged leather pads on my regular home made lap to polish cabs. The problem with that was that if the drip pan dried before I got to polishing, it would blow rock dust all over the place when I started it up. And let me tell you, that was like stomping on a vacuum bag - what a mess! I'd have to spritz water on it to keep that from happening.
I have this 1/6 hp motor a buddy gave me. I was originally thinking I could make a tumbler and use it on that, but haven't gotten into tumbling enough to have the need to build one. So I decided yesterday to throw together a quick and easy dry polisher to use my diamond pads on.
I built a small wood base/frame from scrap plywood and lumber I had laying around, and connected a cord I cut off a junk box fan at work.
I had to buy some rubber base pads, an arbor, and a few bolts because the ones I had weren't long enough. The master lap plate I received by mistake from the rock lady when I bought my diamond disks, and he told me to keep it instead of mailing it back. I need to dig around and find a switch to put inline, but am now using a switched power strip so it's not completely necessary.
I repolished 2 cabs I previously cut and it works great. I'm on the fence still about if I need a guard around the plate and motor shaft. I'll probably find a scrap pail or something to make one from.
Total I have less than $5.00 in this build, and now I don't need to worry about having a haboob in the shop every time I start up the lap to polish. ;D
Hope y'all like it,
Nate
