It looks to me like all you have to do is step outside of the city anywhere in CA and pick up great rocks. Easier to list where there are no rocks than where there are rocks. lol Jim

Good seeing you today (Saturday). I would have chatted, But you had four empty buckets on the way in and I had two full ones on the way out. Hope you found a lot of great stuff! Later, Bill

Jim, you need to move out here Actually, you may not like SoCal. Very urbanized although a two-hour drive will get you to all sorts of collection sites. Susan - beautiful cuts! Let me know if you want to "dump" that LCC agate on someone! I'd be glad to take it off your hands!

Ha, Jim, I wish. I live in the middle of the Central Valley - no rocks here! However, I did just come back from the Sac Mineral Society rock show and BBQ, and came back with lots of neat rock, and to my surprise, I found a slab of Chapenite! Neat stuff, Susan, you got a good find out there! (p.s. he sold it to me for $5)

Ha, you may have a deal, Paul. Next time I go to my mom's house (in NB), I'll drop it off! We'll see how the cab turns out first though. I may be surprised, we'll see!
Great slab Dee! So many possibilities for cabs! Or, are you going to save it?
Hi again Bill! Left with 6 full buckets! (Everybody else, there was another estate sale today). You should have stayed and dug through the junk behind the garage with me - under the rotten wood, and crap rocks, and wood chips, and decomposed plastic bags and crates and etx., there were some fantastic smalls of (and I know I'm going to butcher this, so somebody please step in and fix it) - cocaxtonite. (Clear or lavender quartz with gold rutiles in them). I found 4 little guys, I know there had to be more but they were closing the sale and I had to leave. Yes, I was there from 9:20 to 3 . . . ! No idea what I'm going to do with them (earrings come to mind since they flash, but might be too big for that), but they're sure purty!

Pics! So fun to look through rock... my bf was sort of tapping his foot waiting for me to go through the bins (there were maybe 6 tables of vendors??) so I know who to leave home next time. Although...it probably saved me from spending more money, so I have to keep that in mind too, lol.
I'll be cabbing it for sure.
IF you decide to venture further north, I picked up a flyer for the the Valley Springs 38th Annual Pow Wow from August 31 - Sept 1,2,3. Now that's a big show (for me) and is about 36 miles East of Stockton. Tempted? ;D

Dang, I would be totally tempted. But I'm on a scuba boat that weekend (5 days).
Yeah, I have to take some pics of them.

Deedolce, that Chapenite slab looks like Tiffany stone. That's a sweet piece.

Susan and BillG, if you're ever down this way, let me know. You can take some of the Yermo agates with you. Got a lot laying around that you're welcome to (actually you're all welcome to the materials if you want some. I can slab it or just send you the raw materials, just PM me).
We were up at my mother-in-law's place on Saturday as the backyard needed some serious maintenance. I ended up cutting down two trees, a 15 foot pine and a 20 foot spruce and then thinning and topping this 35 foot pine and two other trees. I had asked if the gardner was caring for them but apparently she only pays him for the lawn and basic trimming so it's been at least six years since the trees had had any work done (prior to my father-in-law passing away). Would have dragged some stuff along but we were pretty busy.

Thanks Paul! My mom lives in Costa Mesa (base of the peninsula), so I'm down there frequently. I'll pm you next time, and your boys can give me the grand tour of the rock collection. And we can do a swap!
Likewise if you're ever up in West LA. I find that people from OC are NEVER "just" up in LA though! lol.

Susan, I would have stayed longer but we left for Washington DC the next morning. Got back Monday night. I did collect a few rocks from undisclosed sites. Even brought back a rootbeer bottle to smash and tumble. You never get too far away from this hobby.
Paul, I guess those trees were a work out. Better to trim those before the Santa Anas start up. My wife keeps filling up dates on the summer calendar. We do need to get together. I'm finding that the Seachers have a pretty good club. The rock sales have been worth it alone.

Yeah, Tracy and that other guy . . . John? have been hounding (haha, pun) me to join Searchers, so I did, for the field trips mostly. Are either of you going to the Riverside show? Our Culver City show was fun, I should have left my wallet at home! I'm now a bona fide silversmith. Got all the equipment, and the silver is in the mail . . . sigh. This hobby just doesn't stop!
I've collected a few rocks from undisclosed sites too, lol! :-)

Do it now, Susan, before you can't afford to do it, or there's no longer any place you can legally collect! "Ago pro dies" Jean

Hey Susan, another rock sale in Paramount this Saturday. 50 cents a pound! Like I need more rocks. It's not like buying food on sale. Rocks don't go bad if not frozen.

Yup, saw that, I'm struggling with myself over it. I think I'll probably go! there must be some treasures in those piles. Now that I know what Chapenite looks like on the outside, I'm pretty sure I saw several other pieces of it. Plus I want to bug Tracy about when he's going to hold the slab sale. ;-) How about you?

Will be there. I think early before it's too hot. About 9am. I've been pretty wiped out after the vacation and a week of hockey camp. I even missed the Searchers meeting last night. Where is my mind? Maybe see you there.

Got my days mixed up. I thought it was on Saturday. Can't make it to Paramount on Sunday. If you go, find something great!

Oh no no no. Not moving to SC. Ya'll should move up here. I can be picking up agates and jaspers and woods and all kinds of neat stuff in ten minutes from my house. And they are free. lol I will admit that I have picked the close places pretty clean so now I am having to travel 13 minutes to my favorite place with the pink agate. Starting to find a little dendritic agate and some kind of agate with white orbs in it. This place is like an agate mine if you know where to go and there are thousands of acres to cover. Working up to winter in the south though because I do not like the cold any more.
Happy hunting. BTW NO CROWDS. HAHAHA Jim
