Great looking batch of cabs Ed! I also think the black background makes the colors pop a lot better. Those Matra Mountains cabs rule!....Mel

get black leather for the black back ground as that does not collect lint and hair
cool cabs!

I think greatly improved. black background works well, most highlights do not have white-out, which is good. there is still a small hard light source, but is does not distract very much

Iagree black shows off the cabs better. As far as lint and hair every editing software even the free ones allow you to remove the lint and hair with the click of a button. Great looking work. Stu

Love the cabs and I do see a lot of difference in the backgrounds! I'm still messing around with it.

I think the background makes a difference not just because of better contrast with the stones, but it changes the light metering of the camera/exposure.
what camera are you using? any special settings?
if the dark background is the same in all dark back ground photos, you still need a way to get more control of the metering because it is varying from dark gray to almost black.
sometimes you can set whether the camera meters on just the center or on a spread of positions. I have not done this, but I did read it in some manuals.

All camera meters - regardless of manufacture - are calibrated to read absolute white as 18% gray. This is why pics taken of snow scenes appear off-white unless the meter is set to over expose by about 1/3 of a stop or a correction is made in Photoshop, etc. On the other end, this is why black backgrounds don't always appear as black. To compensate, under exposing the pix by about the same amount or post processing will solve the problem. Setting the meter to center weighted can help also especially if the stone fills the smaller rectangle in the frame.
Nice cabs!

Thanks for showing us the comparison! I see now that black is the choice to make for pics. The colors are so much more vivid.

White wins here. Black absorbs too much color. Also suggest stiff background for a y color background, and non-fuzzy background.

Thanks for the comments on the stones and the pics. I'm using a Sony DSC H1, it's about as close to having the features of a SLR as you can get. I bought it when this model first came out, around 6 years ago. I wish everyone could see these cabs in person as the colors of the cabs are more true using the white background. Yes, I agree, the colors are more vivid using a black background, but when a customer opens their package and is disappointed in the color of the cab, well, that's not good for business. The reason the black backgrounds are varied from black to grayish black is photoshop, I played around with getting rid of the lint and hairs. Anyway, I had a good setup, maybe I'll just go back to it and tweak it a little

Funny, your camera seems to pick up the colors better on the dark background and mine seems to do better on white. Photographing is the only frustrating part of cabbing to me. I'd give up on it if I didn't feel it was necessary to catalog what I've made and to post here.
Oh and the cabs are really nice. Love the plume and the two Matara Mt. cabs, never heard of that material before.

Ed, beautiful cabs. I like the dark background more, but I can see why you prefer the white one. That Matra Mtn, is it from Zoran?
