I also like LED because of its directionality. Lowes, Home Depot, etc. carry 5-8 Watt PAR 20 daylight floods, spots, etc. that are small enough to fit into most swing-arm reflector-style lamps. They run cool, give off a huge amount of light, don't waste light and heat directed toward the reflector. They cost more, but last far longer than incandescent or fluorescent. The only negative is that they are heavier than a standard bulb (might weigh down some of the less-beefy swing-arms).

I'm with Mario. I have a swing arm lamp with a broken clamp, so I just screwed a block of wood with a hole in it to my desk. I use an OTT light in my lamp; plenty bright and color correct.
