Man, two weeks from right now we'll be almost there!! ;D
As far as meals we plan on bringing our own, but will be happy to pitch in where we can. The Needle Peak trip sounds like fun, though our truck is 2wd. It does good off road but if its something really rough I'm not gonna chance it. Any thoughts what day that trip would be?
Not so worried about lions, rattlers or other wildlife.. 'cept for Africanized bees! That's always in the back of my mind hounding here.. disturbing a hive and getting swarmed. Don't know if they've dug in over there, but you hear about it in the news here (people and pets getting attacked) all the time.
Really looking forward to this everyone!! Any news yet if Don and Dorthy is going to make it?

I'm there in spirit! We'll get as close as the Petrified Forest outside of Holbrook. I joked with my wife that we should take a detour down that way. I don't think she was amused.

Brian I think you said something about pet wood? There is a lot more at stillwell, VERY diverse wood, a little palm but not much that I found. You've seen that I want to dig one up, uh this thing was standing straight up, and very colorful. I want to find the roots, they have to be unreal. We were kinda planning to go there early because we doubted anyone else would want to go, If you want to go we can wait for you.
Chuck you will be missed my friend.
Food: I will prolly do a crock pot thing at least one night for everyone (I have no idea what yet though).
I'll scout the bluffs I want to hunt for Flower garden before most arrivals to see if it is worth hunting (we have always found great along the road/path so has to be great).
Can't wait!!

I have a 4dr Jeep and will be making the Needle Peek run. So, I have room for three or more if someone wants to ride in the back.
I'm a little bit concerned about snakes after talking to some hunter friends about it. I'll be bringing some snake guard leggings just case. Not much concern about the other critters but I always carry a buck knife on my belt. Haven't really seen any Bees out there....
I'm also a little bit concerned about bringing my cab grinder. Since we aren't staying at WWR I don't know that I'll be comfortable leaving valuables at the campsite. I'm hoping that I'll be able to lock it up in someone's trunk when we go on the hunts.
Jeri- Cell phone was out of commision for a couple of days so I didn't get your message until yesterday... I'll call later this eve.
Will there be a burn ban in effect? I was thinking about grilling some burgers or something easy....

So... If I'm reading this right, to go on the Needle Peak trip, it's $40 per person per day, plus membership fee to join the Rollin’ Rock Club? Anyone know how much that will be?

Bluebonnets were blooming over Spring Break. The Ocotilllos @ Big Bend should be blooming right about now. ;D

Hey Jeri we'll bring along our metal detector. Of course if you find the keys with it I'll expect the $20 reward ;D Mark I'd love to do the Stillwell trip, especially after seeing the chunk of palm Chuck found last time  The extra mileage is making me reluctant tho, we will have 3 days of hounding and WWR is the main goal. Needle Peak sounds very intriguing as long as we can ride along or at least not tear up the truck. Christa might stay at camp that day.. she doesn't quite have the rocks in her head that I do ;D Dan we could easily lock up your cabber in our truck while we're out, no problem. Susan them Blue Bonnets are soooo pretty!! Hope you reconsider making the trip!

I'm late to the party but hi to everyone. My name is Deb. I'm roswelljero's friend. I've been wanting to go to WWR for years and I'm excited about coming.
Eager to go to WWR, Stillwell, Ritchie Ranch. I might be willing to give Needle Peak a try if I can hitch a ride.
I have Fibromyalgia so I will staying in the Best Western close by.
Also I'm very allergic to eggs and chicken. If you plan either for your meal don't change on my account. Just let me know because eating either one would be a trip to the emergency room for me.
I'm very excited about meeting all of you and and I can't wait to get there!

So... If I'm reading this right, to go on the Needle Peak trip, it's $40 per person per day, plus membership fee to join the Rollin’ Rock Club? Anyone know how much that will be? Last year, it was $10/family to join the rock club. The Marfa trip for 2 family members was $90... So form a family for the trip and save $5. Susan! Thanks for the pic! I'm looking forward to seeing blooms this trip! ;D Hey Jeri we'll bring along our metal detector. Of course if you find the keys with it I'll expect the $20 reward ;D THANKS!!! Heck, I'll rent it from you for $20 whether I find the keys with it or not! Beef, tell you what... You can have your pick of any pet wood I bring back from Stillwell. (You might have to fight Mark for his though.) I know what it's like to not have time to do everything you want to when you're on a trip. Will that work for you or do you want to go to Stillwell? Yay! Deb finally made it here! This will be her first 'organized' rockhounding trip... Y'all be nice to the newbie or you'll have me to deal with! ;D LOL I may try to call Teri and get the scoop on 'her' Needle Peak trip. From what I understand, when Trey took people they climbed quite a ways up the mountain. I'll also ask about the driving conditions. Later, jeri

Chuck Well since you will be traveling down the road through I-40 and perhaps needing to loosen a load, you might want to stop at a corner in Winslow, Arizona. I've heard tell that it's such a fine sight to see. Remember, you might win and you might lose, but you may never be there again. (HEY WHO SAID THAT!) Condor

LOL Condor! I've been thinking about that Eagles tune, too. Along with "I want to sleep with you in the desert tonight, with a million stars all around."
Hey Beef: I found that palm bog about 5 yrs ago on my first trip to Stillwell. It is the only piece I've found there. No doubt there is more, but I wouldn't set my expectations very high that you'll find it.

Jeri I was just teasing about the reward! Oh, and I don't charge no rental fees neither Hi Deb, we look forward to meeting you too! I didn't tell Christa there were motels near by, but she read your post this morning and put a bug in my ear. We're gonna look into a room rather than pack all the extras for roughing it. Dunno yet, but, as she explained to me, there would be more room in the truck for extra rocks on the return trip Hey Condor, take it easy! Don't let the sound of your old grinding wheels make you crazy Chuck I'm sure beauties like that are very far and few between. So.. have you slabbed it yet? Another day closer... Woohoo!!!! ;D

As far as eating I plan on taking simple things like crackers, gatorades, fruits and such. This way I can take that with me where I hunt. Pretty much what I mentioned before. For the evening meal I will probably just go to Subway and bring it back to camp and eat there. At least that's my plan for now.

Will there be a burn ban in effect? I was thinking about grilling some burgers or something easy.... When I first called KCs, the guy said charcoal fires in a grill were OK... As far as I can tell from here (Illinois), there still isn't a burn ban in Brewster County, TX. We kinda survived on burgers in 2010 didn't we? Oh and hot dogs too. Later, jeri

Dan, really glad you are going to needle peak. I seem to remember a tortilla soup from Jamie the first year (crock pot, will travel) This will be a great trip. Still looking for a pom pom pic In case I can't find one? Rough looks like a clear agate a little bluissh, unless you cut it the Pom pom can't be seen. Stillwell, Once we cross the road. It will lake tens mins to the pet wood and a really nice area to hunt in. I really want those roots! For a idea of the vastness see my cover pic on FB www.facebook.com/spikes.stoneworks Everything that isn't blurry nt on the ranch ? Big Bend can be seen A I want its Is that Bloody root. Yep, beef, it's slabbed. It was a saw killer because it's very hard.
Absolutely incredible IMHO. Just need to find time to take pictures and post.

I emailed Teri with our concerns about the Needle Peak trip. Here's what she replied: ~~~~~ To get to East Needle Peak, you go south from Alpine on Highway 118 til you get to Study Butte. Then you take highway 170 west for about 12 miles, and go south on a dirt road for 5 or 6 miles. You can also get there going south from Marfa, but it's a much longer drive. Some of the dirt road is very good, but as you get farther from the highway, it gets rougher. People have made it in 2wd vehicles, except for the very end of the road where you drive into the dry creek bed. The guy with the AWD should do fine if he's a confident driver. Driver confidence means more than equipment type in most situations. It's not really '4 wheeling' in that we're always on the road or in the creek bed. There are no huge rocks to crawl over, but there are some major ruts. The creek bed is sandy, though, and that's why I suggest 4wd. I won't let a vehicle go into the creek bed unless it's 4wd or awd, because my jeep isn't necessarily strong enough to pull them out if they get stuck. When you get down here, there's a climb to get up from the creek bed to the flat area around it. Then the amount of climbing you need to do will depend on where you want to go. There are plenty of great places to find agate and other rocks without any more climbing after you get out of the creek bed. The biggest difficulty here is the heat and low humidity. People need to drink LOTS of extra water and pace themselves so they can hunt for the whole day. There is no shade down here except for the banks of the creek, and at noon that's not there, either. So make sure everyone dresses for the heat (long sleeved cotton shirts are great, need hats, lots of sunscreen, long pants and boots) and has lots of water. Hope this helps! ~~~~~ What do you think Gil? On the water issue I'd add... Both caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you... So if you don't like water, bring something like Gatorade and bring twice as much as you think you'll drink. Later, jeri

Sounds A LOT better than the west side, I was sweating it!
The dry creek bed is really really cool btw, when I posted a pic of it (where we drove up it) my friend commented that it was great to see again, so it must be like that on the east side also. Be sure to bring cameras.
Oh something else to remember, Big Bend is right next door and some on the south side of needle peak. NO crossing that fence to get or with rocks, even Trey took a harder way down rather than cross it.
Can't wait for this trip!
