Some criticism, eh? Let’s see . . . pics 6 & 8, the cabs are off center. Not sure if it’s framing or cropping that needs work. ;D Seriously, they all look super, especially for just starting out. What higher grit wheel did you finish these with? Autumn leaves in pic 6 is Stone Canyon jasper from California. Probably one of those rocks that best fits the jasper/agate description. Don’t know how close it can be found to Pleasant Hill.

Thanks for the kind words all. Like I said the camera is kind and you can't see all the cracked or broken attempts heehee :-) What higher grit wheel did you finish these with? Autumn leaves in pic 6 is Stone Canyon jasper from California. Probably one of those rocks that best fits the jasper/agate description. Don’t know how close it can be found to Pleasant Hill. Thanks Parfive and for the ID on the 'autumn leaves' stone. I picked that slab up in a box of aquarium junk at the flea market and had no idea what it was. My finest wheel is a 3000 grit Nova. I spent a lot of time between 600 and 1200 so getting my new 3000 on last night was like the icing on the cake :-) I'm already saving for a 14,000 Thanks again everyone.

What beautiful first cabs! Looks like you're cabbing since ages. Perfectly shaped and polished.
Did you also drill the hole in the pietersite? Pietersite can be a material very pleasant to work with, maybe you found it difficult because that piece has a lot of matrix.

Thanks everyone. I've learned so much from the experts on this board - lurking around for the last six months or so and drooling over all of your beautiful creations. You're all making my head so big I might not make it though the garage door to finish any of the others I'm working on :-) Did you also drill the hole in the pietersite? Pietersite can be a material very pleasant to work with, maybe you found it difficult because that piece has a lot of matrix. Thanks Adrian. Yes I drilled it myself - that's one of the many flaws I could point out - drilled it before it was fully shaped and the hole came dangerously close to the edge before I was done LOL. Thanks for the tip about the matrix - it's good to know that if I ever can afford one of the larger slabs with more blue it will be easier to work with. At $0.75 a gram I bought the smallest piece I could find just thinking that I would give it a try - I did notice it didn't have much blue compared to the larger slabs. It also might be because it's thin and too flat - if I could have gotten more of a dome on it it probably would look better. Unfortunately my girl promptly fell in love with it and already has it around her neck :-)
