Good idea! Don't think it will hurt the vacuum sealer. Will try it with my food saver.

I love that thing Pat.I put up 20-30 pounds of deer jerky every year.A lot of other stuff. You know, the vaseline was a long way from getting in the sealer cause it draws up so slow. Also marinate steaks with it-really gets the juice in the steak. before 8 hours later

your method looks like it works good. I can see the difference after 8 hours. Pretty cool jamesp.

That's strange but..... so interesting? Are these finished tumbled stones that you are just enhancing or is this a treatment for something bigger? I am completely facisnated by the 8 hour change but trying to figure out what the end result is to be used for. Cool!

This is a pic this morning. They have maxed out.It takes a week or two w/out the vacumn. This idea came from Matt(Mattaya),Brad. He is purchasing Snake oil for enriching jades.I knew my coral has thousands of microcopic capillaries and way changes color when left in water, maxing out about 3-4 days in color. But water drys out and color goes w/it.So i copied Matt but used vaseline and ChapStick w/good success. So jades, corals, quartzites and other porous materials may react well.Just saying, even with a super polish(like tntmom's) there still may be moisture enrichment issues to bring out color. Those are already tumbled Krystee. And i could have put 3-400 grams in that bag.i would suggest doing such treatment on finished stones, not uncut.Guess it's no different than moisture enriching cream. No photo shopping, just straight pics Attachments:

Epoxy would be more permanent? I can see the Vaseline cooking out here in the desert.

I put some treated rocks under the lamp and was surprised not to find a pool of oil John.I was also surprised the stone did not feel oily. Some higher temp waxes under mild heat and the vacumn thing may be approaching permanant.Snuffy said a local shop uses Bri-Wax. Epoxy would be as permanant as it could get.I suppose a repolishing would be necessary. What do you think?

Did you re-apply vacuum as air leaked from the stones?

The vacumn remained stong.Like when i cut the bag it was still vacumned tight. Is that what you are asking Scott?I wiped the vaseline off and have insane rich color.and details i do not normally see. Coral is strange,i hate sawing it.A lot has a lot of capillaries that store saw oil for 19.7 years.Best left on a hot roof for a year or two.Heat treaters cut it w/water and go thru saw blades fast to avoid burning the oil to brown and turning the coral brown.A lot of the coral is sealed by silicification and has no pores. The ones w/pores/capillaries are the ones that have best colors.Photos are not showing a lot.

Instead of vacuuming vaseline, why not do what I do to shine specimens ? Hit a yard sale for a small crock pot. Fill the crock pot 3/4 full of rocks and mineral oil. Cover the crock pot and turn it to the warming setting. Leave it overnight. The warmth will expand the pores in the rocks slightly, allowing them to absorb oil. You mat have to wipe the stones dry 2 or 3 times, but the oil won't yellow over time like wax does.

Hmmm....I might have to try the vacuum trick with an industrial vacuum pump (22"Hg to 25"Hg of vacuum).

Right on, I'm looking forward to reporting back on the Snake Oil with pics when it's delivered. I don't have a vacuum sealer.
