Right on, I'm looking forward to reporting back on the Snake Oil with pics when it's delivered. I don't have a vacuum sealer. Matt, You will have to drop by some time and we can try it out on the jade and snake oil combination. I'll have to find a suitable bag and some fittings. Justin

A little vacumn goes a long way.Especially if you can maintain a vacumn and add a little long term heat to thin out the oil/wax/additive.

Jim et al, a reptile heat mat from Zoomed gets pretty warm (like 150F) and is meant for continuous duty.

Just curious, why we don't simply polish the stone with no additives??

Forget 'enhancing' to get a polished look.
Just polish the stone to have the same look?

@shotgunner I'm looking to enhance the color with an oil method because I'd like to keep is as a specimen in the state/shape it's in now. I also plan to do this on a gem quality untouched river rounded jade to enhance it while I am wait some time to start a project with it. For me it's a nice way to display the piece so I don't have to take it out of the cabinet to wet with water when showing it off.

These are both completely tumble polished.Applications of chapstick(or vaseline) are smeared on the darker area.Use vacumn and it enrichens more.A lot of agates absorb, like they become hydrated and are way richer in color, polished or not.

The same batch before and a week after being out of vaseline and well dryed w/incandescent lamp. The pics do not do the color justice A slab is easily tested by putting a spot of vaseline on it for a few days.Wipe it off and see if enhancement happens.May be surprised Next batch is 2 pounds 4 onces.Black bucket is mixing bucket(use a tablespoon per pound).Bucket is soft so it can be squeezed to pour into vacumn bag.Stick a paper plate in the bag to keep vaseline from getting on seal portion of bag. All of those are coral, many will not change because the pores sealed at silicification. Many pet woods will react well.

Seems like the plate would block a lot of the suction. Have you tried a paper towel instead?
Picture?
One more thing: what are you going to do with these?
Thanks.

Pat,i meant to say-use the curled up plate as a 'funnel'to guide the vaseline coated rocks into the bag so vaseline does not get on the inside of the bag and mess up it's ability to heat seal at the top of the bag. Then remove the paper plate and then seal. I am not sure. They are experiments on color from heat treatment, polishability. The colors are unorthodox so i may sell it or make jewelry out of it.I keep learning new colors from heating and more stuff to do w/the coral. It is a peculiar material. The vaseline is clear. It is odd that it dramatically changes the color. It is famous for absorbing saw oil.Much of it has tiny pipelines running all thru it. Why does the color chage so much?Next time i will use non scented. These smell like a baby's bottom:>

This vaseline experiment has been a huge success.Have vacumn packed several pounds of my best coral and coastal plains chert with very good and long lasting results. The color enrichment is amazing.I feel like it is not cheating or cheesey.Water or oil hrdration is impacting molecular level or what?No matter,it works.

I wonder how long before retreating is needed? Very interesting idea:).

Also wondering if epoxy impregnation using the vaccume seal would work too... Epoxy can take 12 hours to dry... so once vaccumed, you can cut bag open and pull out to cure...

I am amazed at the difference Helen.I left treated stuff under hot desk lamp and it is still rich in color.Still smells like baby's butt:).I must study water soluble formed silica depositions like we have here in ancient ocean territory. That material is strongly effected by hydration. My tumbles and rough is so rich in color when water wet.It slowly loses it's rich color over hours. Not with the vaseline. Can ya get not scented? Try it on a piece of yours.Just smear on half the piece for a day or 2 then wipe off.You will see difference.

Go to a Dollar Store and buy plain mineral oil. You should be able to get regular mineral oil at the drug store also. Other idea is buying a generic Vaseline, not sure how the thickness of petroleum jelly would absorb, but I'd think jelly would last longer with less seepage than oil...
