I have yet to own a slab saw of any sort, but I find the discourse on threads such as these to be of great value. Seems like a price that would let some folks that otherwise not be able to afford a saw to get their feet wet. I know more about this sort of saw now than I would have if there had been no speculation. . . I would buy one.

Is that your car? I actually thought a saw painted with annodized purple would look awesome. I have never used that kind of paint just like the way it looks.

My second sphere was lace amethyst. I just bought charoite. Have some burro creek hunks that are awesome.... If you ever make me a saw, make it purple.

I use to get into trouble with a fellow hoodlum that had a purple charger (no white top) and an older dark green one. Back in the 25 cent gas days.

Hey Rob! Any plans to sell a drop saw kit or complete saw like the Lortone 14 inch LSS-14?

Hey Rob! Any plans to sell a drop saw kit or complete saw like the Lortone 14 inch LSS-14? Not right off. Not a bad idea though. I like the drop saws because unlike a swing arm saw the blade tracking doesn't much matter and you don't have a bunch of alignment issues. The vise is easy to make also. I will kick this idea around. Probably the biggest expense would be a pump. List some sources if you have any. I won't be jumping on it anytime soon but is something i've thought about.

Also i've never used one and I bet there are some plans out there that would take out some of the guesswork like im not really sure how long to make the arm, basically not sure of the balance ordeal. Can't be that hard I wouldn't think. Blade guard might be a pain but might cheat on that and make a box instead of radius pieces. All this stuff takes a lot of time you can't really justify working on something for a month for peanuts unless it's for yourself. Granted they would go together a lot faster after you made one. I should've bought a 16" one I seen at an estate sale that I don't believe is made anymore but I didn't want to deal with it at the time can't recall the name something like Gemstone perhaps.

I had a bad experience setting up a Lortone drop saw. First cut on a fairly soft rock went well, halfway throuhg the 2nd cut I saw dust flying and quickly shut it off, too late to save the blade. It had sprayed enough oil out of the base in the first cut that the pump was sucking air on the 2nd. It's amazing how fast one can ruin a blade. As for the "propellerized" saw, reminds me of a home built saw I purchased real cheap just to get the almost new blade. The inventor had used a stepper motor with a full on controller setup with micro switches and auto return after the cut. All in a harbor freight parts washer. Stepper failed after a dozen or so cuts, the feed screw was attached directly to the stepper, which did not have the bearings to support it... We named it Frankensaw.

Nah, we've used swamp cooler pumps ($20) for years with no problems. The metal work and welding is what keeps me from making a Lortone knock off.

I've used several, and I'll take a Lortone 14 or 16 inch drop saw anyday. I've cut thousands of slabs with one. Where I used to teach, we had a 14 inch autofeed covington, and a Lortone dropsaw. I'd routinely cut 4 to 5 slabs for every one the autofeed cut. The Lortone, if set up right, is a slabbers dream. It cuts rings around anything else. Wish I could find one for sale near me where the owners don't want 2 arms and 2 legs for a saw that hasn't been in production for many years. I even called Lortone and asked about left over parts, etc, schematics, parts list, anything they had. They said they got rid of everything, even the paperwork years ago, and if I wanted to make one to go for it, they didn't care. I took one apart once, and measured and took pics of everything so if I ever get the change, I'll make a couple. I could sell 10 of them tomorrow at a fair price.

How big of a blade can you fit in the Frankensaw?

It was a 12 inch saw. After the feed motor fried about 6 or 8 cuts along I took it apart and most if it is in my scrap pile. The blade worked well in my 12/14" Highland park, cut lots of rocks. I kept the controller, lots of nifty electronics and a couple HD relays.

Just for verification I think the covington kit at cigarbox rocks might have small roller bearings on the right side of the vise.
That is a 18" kit. Now the 16" kit that I had did not have bearings and rode metal on metal. If they are still made that way I don't know.

Robs rock shop is right, I bought one about 3 years ago. it still runs, and cuts perfect. in fact I just contacted Rob again to upgrade to a 24" saw, but he isn't making them ( no time/ not enough profit) I assume. and he is very busy to build one for such little profit. the saw I have I don't know where he bought it, but if I knew I would definately buy another bigger one. thanks I haven't been on here in months! now I have to find another builder, bummer!
