Sorry to recycle an old thread but I heard from a reliable source that the quality of the garnets went up last summer. I saw some photos of nice six ray cabs and some excellent 12 sided crystals found in 2014. Hopefully the quality of the material will continue to improve. It's such a fun site and the Forest Service does a great job of running it while keeping the cost reasonable. Good job Forest Service.
later,
Brent.

Garnets are just cool. Waiting to see some 12 pointers. The bowl of grape candy is etched in my mind.

I was able to speak to one of the Forest Service geologists responsible for stockpiling the garnet gravel at the Forest Service dig. He told me that they found a lot of good quality garnet when they dug gravel this year. He also told me they were finding a lot of 12 sided crystals. That's a good sign that there will be six-ray material. I might have to go try my hand at digging garnets this summer.
The new gravel wa stockpiled in October of this year. Hopefully their geologist knows what he was talking about.

Good luck Brent! They are totally awesome! I wish I could sell garnets like Brent's for $5/pound. Better yet find a spot to collect them like that.

I wish I had more than I do but I heard they dug up some good material this year. Do you cut cabs? later Brent

After doing some research on the history of Emerald Creek garnet mining your finds are too special. In this link Emerald Creek Garnet LTD is mining the almandines like placer gold due to those garnet's density. I found some old bags of #5 grit garnet stashed for years in a warehouse out east. Even #5's are rarely found these days. Run the video, they are filling dump trucks with tiny garnets for abrasives. The big garnets are far and few, the largest sold nowadays are #16 grit. emeraldcreekgarnet.com

OMG!!! Just wanted to say those are incredible! I fell in love with garnets in elementary school as I have more time on the board and get to take some pictures everyone will understand. However those are just wonderful!
