roy where should I weather map? Boise is probably too far to be accurate, is there a better town/city to search? homedale would be closest

No idea what the weather is in western Idaho, but it has rained for the past 36 hours here in Southeastern Idaho, so all of ya be sure to take some rain gear and have a ball for the fat guy in the wheelchair since I am not gonna make it, possibly another time!!!

What a field trip. Here's my brief summary: Leaving home on the wet west side of Oregon on Thursday. Driving into the Succor Creek area Friday morning on the dry side of Oregon. I did not get pictures at our first collection site, the Succor Creek (kitty litter) jasper site. This was a claim originally filed to dig the vermaculite clay, the miner tossed the jasper to the side and let the rockhounds have it. The clay was interesting, for a little while I was an inch taller, LOL. The drive to the 2nd dig site. It rained like this when we were in the cars and mostly let up at the dig sites, happily. We were with a pretty large group from several NW rock clubs, mostly Spokane WA Queens stone jasper site getting ready to rockhound. Not a lot here but Elizabeth found some promising pieces. After that we wrapped up the day at the Cripple Creek picture jasper site. Roy and another rockhound contemplating a rock... Roy also found this little critter up there. Some people saw a couple small rattlers as well but I decided not to try out the macro setting with them. Saturday morning at Succor creek... NO MORE RAIN! The RTH crew From the left, Brand new member Highdesert2003(Tony), Wife Elizabeth and me, roy(Roy), free2rockhound(Scot) and his rock dog, orrum(Orrum), Tonys granddaughter Elizabeth, and catmandewe(Tony) The group split up here between leaf fossils and T-eggs. We chose eggs, some of these are blue opal eggs. My wife, the human gem magnet, found a real nice blue opal piece. After the eggs we made a brief stop at a site with a jasper called Monarch jasper. We didn't get good pics there but get a few promising looking chunks. The rest of the day was spent at the Wildhorse jasper site. The mine owner only allowed surface collection here, but there was enough nice stuff to make everyone happy. Tony and Elizabeth at Wildhorse. Elizabeth is quite the little rockhound. On the way back to the campground. He was keeping a close eye on us as we passed. Bet he'll taste good... Scenery from the camp... And as the sun sets into the west... We had to drive back Saturday night, someone else will have to fill in Sundays fun. GOOD TIMES! Rock pics to follow...

Lee that is a fabulous photo essay. Glad to see catmandewe playing in the dirt with Elizabeth. Nothing better to be had anywhere. Lee it appears you married well in many departments. Human gem magnet and all....... Some gorgeous scenery and Cliven Bundy's cattle too! Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together. I missed a good trip!

Great photo essay! One thing was missing: a shot of old Three-Finger Butte which is the dominating geographic feature of the area. I tried to upload one but my analog approach to digital stuff was unsuccessful, as usual. Your image of the Queenstone location brought back a vivid memory.
Long ago I found a Queenstone ledge near Marsing while hunting for opal-filled thundereggs. It was a 4-5 inch thick vein dipping at roughly 30-35 degrees. Someone clearly had been working it but I couldn't find any claim posts so I got out the sledge and chisels. I noticed a fairly large cavity under the vein. Close inspection revealed a WWII surplus ammunition canister hidden away. Without thinking too much about it I grabbed it and popped it open. Instant terror!
Inside were two sticks of dynamite so old they were oozing Nitroglycerine. Gently -- very, very gently! -- I put it back into its hiding place and decided to gather my tools and resume my previous hunt for opal. When dynamite "crystallizes" Nitro like that the tiniest bump can set it off. I count myself lucky to be alive.

Elizabeth wanted to get pics of 3 finger on the way up but I wanted to wait till the sun was higher, then I forgot on the way back down.

Nice trip report thanks! Cant wait to see more rock pictures. We're sorry we didn't make it up there with you all. We had our own low budget condensed trip into Nevada and got rained on snowed on and generally frozen the whole time haha.
