By way of welcoming myself back to this board I thought I'd post a couple of specimen photos of the best Olympic Poppy I've collected over the years.... This one is the best of the best slabs I've ever seen. Photo is taken dry, cause I'm too dumb to remember to lick 'em before snapping the shot. Very Rarely, I see green orbs: Lastly, This specimen shows where the stone fractured some time ago, and healed with epidote and quarts. The fault line fractured perfectly to reveal the crystalline structure of the epidote:

Wowser, very cool specimens! Those green tones are very common in poppy jasper from the coast ranges north of SF bay and points north....Mel

Thank you all! It is Olympic Peninsula Washington. Mel- I wish the green eyes were a little more common up here. It's hard to find nice green pieces. Especially out of the spot where I mine it. Mine looks more like the other two, and I usually find the green eyes out at the ocean.

The Olympic Peninsula Washington is a very large place. Can you pin it down to a smaller area where this material is found. I have found about five pounds of poppy jasper walking (a lot of walking) on the beaches as tumbled stones about an inch across but never in the rough as pictured. Our rock club in Aberdeen WA would be very interested in your find. Don

Yeah, the green tones are also very rare up at Hornitos or over around Morgan Hill too, though the association with epidote is common at Hornitos.....Mel

Miander- Anytime! Rocpup - I'm keeping my rough location private. It's not very productive, perhaps 250lbs of high grade a year. I do offer rough on ebay from time to time too... I'm sure that you well know what can happen to a spot when word gets out. I would recommend checking out Rialto beach in La Push. I've found some very nice beach tumbled pieces there that are fist sized. Green eyes too! Pics for clicks-

Here's a pic of the Hornitos are poppy from our old ranch. This comes in nodule form and if you look carefully, you can see it also has the epidote around the outer margin of the lower nodule slice and those same green stringers of epidote in the body of the nodule. Interesting to me how similar geology shows up in such widely separated areas. I suspect both areas are Jurassic chert deposits .....Mel Here's Sierra Primrose Poppy with some of the orbs colored by epidote

Very cool and weird. Never saw one like that anywhere I collected. Thanks for the pics. I love to see poppy from other areas....Mel

Now that second pebble is very much like what I collected in the Sierra foothills near Hornitos. Very cool!.....Mel

I just had not seen the rough before. La Push is quite a drive from Monte. I do have my share all I have to do is make time to work some out. Don
