I went hounding at my favorite local spot today and found a huge tree trunk that was stuck in the sand. The patterns included zigzags in the rings, I wanted it so badly...I think the diameter must have been close to 5 ft, there was no way I was going to be able to drag it (along with some 70 lbs I had already collected) to my truck after digging for hours - it was so painful to leave it!

Oh I won't be able to stop thinking of it, but I don't have a backho or whatever you call those little diggers, but I really wish I did. It's one of those finds that you fantasize about happening, and there is nothing I can do about it

You can rent a little backhoe, maybe one of your friends could run it...Easy to operate.

Repeat after me, "IT IS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY."
Even if it wasn't, see sentence one.

Yup, pet wood has bag limits on "public land". 25 pounds plus one piece per day. 250 pounds per year if I'm remembering right. Private property, it's good to have some kind of documentation just in case you happen to go on public lands sometime during your trip. We hunted Greer's Milky Ranch near Pet Forest one year and since we were over the bag limit and collecting numerous areas on that trip, we were advised to get a weight slip and receipt before leaving the fee site so we could prove the pet wood was collected on private land if stopped by a BLM guy.....Mel

yes, this is the purpose of the "plus one piece" clause. Just so you CAN take a really big hunk!

Thanks for the teasers guys, the trunk is in a Regional Park coastline. There is no official statement addressing the collection of specimens - certainly not the removal of an ancient tree trunk with a backhoe. I live in the San Fancisco Bay Area, anyone wanna go halfzies?
