Found this in Lake Michigan today where I find septarians. Sometimes they have small fossils in them, but this looks like a large shell. Think this is a fossil or just a weird clay formation?

Looks like a fossil to me, maybe someone will chime in that knows what he is talking about though. Tony

Coiled shell. Possibly an Ammonite. Nice find that needs careful cleaning to expose more of the shell.

I'm thinking that is a mix of disarticulated fossil bits, and that you probably won't see much more of the ammonite, assuming that's what it is, short of maybe revealing a little more of the already visible chambers. I'm willing to bet it would produce some interesting slabs, though.

Anytime you see those progressively larger segments (so neatly sequentially increasing in size) you can bet you are looking at something biological. Yes there are some loose shells or other things around the periphery, but the central piece is a thing of biological beauty. Goodonya. Tom

someone told me its a coiled nautiloid. I've never found anything remotely like this in Lake Michigan. That particular kind of stone is fairly common in that area and often time has crinoid type fossils in them, but I've never seen a shell so large.

Do I dare sphere it? I think it's large enough to keep the whole thing intact. I got a core bit that's perfect size.

Personally, I'd leave it as is. You may destroy it by trying to sphere it. If any of the mother of pearl coating is hidden under what can be seen, large pieces may pop out while grinding a sphere.

At first glance I was thinking lobster/crayfish looking at the shorter segments toward the fatter end but it is so round like an ammonite and has so many segments like an ammonite. I guess the color made me think of boiled crayfish. Too much gumbo. Fine looking fossil.

Mr James ! Talking about gumbo ! I am still full this morning from having a bowl of gumbo from Gumbeau's on Main Street in Douglasville last night ! They have all kinds of great cajun food. I like the French Quarter Shimp and their gumbo the best ! Everything is always good no matter what you get.
