Well, how can that be? My birthday isn't until October, so you've got a couple months on me, lol.
Glad you were still up, was afraid you might get the BD wish a day late. You know how us old folks need our rest.

Just ring up BR549 and ask for Junior's Rock Tours. Guaranteed to be satisfactory or twice your money back in basalt.

Yeah, I made a couple of references to old TV shows. If I was clever enough with the computer I'd have printed that phone number upside down.
By the jeebus, it was a fun trip. Finished weighing up the nephrite tonight. I purposely brought some rocks home that looked like jade but I was pretty sure weren't, just so that i could check their specific gravity as a reference to aid in the future. Had a couple of surprises, but didn't do too bad. Now that 11 pound chunk is going to be landscaping rock for a while.

Sorted the rocks by size and was amazed that my back was just screaming part of the time. Ready to go again, the pain goes away eventually. lol First up is the smaller than fist size. More or less fist size. Larger than fist size up to "holly molly that is the biggest one I have ever found", or Russ found. There are so many that I do not remember who found the biggest. I remember looking back and seeing Russ walking (more like struggling) back to the pickup and even though I could not see what was in his hands I could tell that he should have made two trips. Wyoming jade also comes in brown and I think I found some. A very large portion of this rock has yellow feldspar mixed in just like all the others that I have found. I had a big hunk of thulite in the saw and I was pooped from so much fun in the sun so I only made one cut on the new stuff. My son picked it out because it was showing some really dark lines of jade in the feldspar. I thought it was mostly feldspar and was not too excited about it but I thought I would humor him. He was exactly right because it turned out to be almost solid dark jade. No photo, I went to bed. I will put up more photos as I stumble along here cutting more of it. Good part is that I am parked under a huge shade tree and it stays pretty cool where I am working. Spent part of the day setting up my tile saw so I can start cutting the small ones too. Jeeze loweeze I just remembered that I have some polishing to finish for Susan's friend Fred. I had lots of time until he got back YESTERDAY. GGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Too many projects going at once. Damn it Russ you really put me in a bind (spoken while dancing a jig) hahaha Jim

By the way, I have gone to calling all of it jade. I got tired of typing nephrite/jade and trying to explain the difference to people I was talking to. My research tells me that jadeite and nephrite are both jade in the eyes of the people that think they are important so I am going with that. If there needs to be a distinction I will use the appropriate one. Jim

Jim, I think your rutilated quartz may be petrified wood.

Looking good, Jim. I've gotten a few slabs cut but no pictures yet. Did take time last night to run off a quick little pendant from an end cut, Russ

Looks good Russ. I switched to cutting the big square stone and it has some awesome pattern in it too. Also did 17 SG tests with some surprising results. A couple of them I have to do over because they just do not look right. Jim

That pendant was actually off the crappiest end of the crappiest rock. Not wasting good rocks on my lack of skill. Interesting about the SG tests, I had a few surprises but not too bad. I'm going to redo some of mine as well, maybe all, once the rock gets past 5 pounds it's just too unwieldy for my little setup. The part that was surprising for me was that a couple of great looking rocks were just outside the range, and a couple that were right in the middle of the range were rocks I was sure would fail. That make any sense? I can tell I'll be up too late reading about jade again.
