The water on the Withlacoochee River had dropped to a level that I could access and divide this large coral. It was basically two large sections and about 100 small sections. Put together in various wedges, squares and rectangles. The large corals must be in a rich silica environment and adjacent corals are often well formed too. The 100 or so small sections filled a couple of 5 gallon buckets. The small sections were rich in amber and yellow color and not so much gray center color. The large section were pulpy or gray in the center as they often are. So the small sections were the target to collect. The seams must have allowed the metal salts to seep in them. Adjacent corals were rich in orange color. No polyps, just cool color. The void to the left was the top quarter and removed in many smaller sections.. To the right is the other top quarter and seemed to be one section. It felt like there was still two quarter sections below water level. A project for lower river level. Note the blue/gray clay coating, once on your hands and tools they are slick and difficult to use. I will tumble the clay off the smaller sections. Takes a day to two, no grit.

I'm a total Newb when it comes to coral. My question is about the white center area. Is it transparent/translucent when slabbed to say .20"?

The boaters hate the coral. They wish that rock hunters would pound them all into tumbles. Broken shear pins takes priority over any specimen fossils in Georgia. Different states, different priorities.

Hey James , what's with the lighter...Don't you bring spectacles on the river? I am too conditioned to size corals based upon your glasses and nothing else.
