I was reading a news story about a guy who ended up in court over spanking his kid. Not abusing- spanking. It is just one more thing that makes me go Hmmm. I'm from a generation that got whippin's at home and swats at school. I believe that I not only deserved what I got, but learned from it, too.
So, were you spanked as a child? Looking back, what do you think about it?

I was and think it did no harm. But our son was rarely spanked and we get compliments on his behavior all the time. Think it depends on the kid as to how effective it is - we all learn different, but I don't have any problem with it in theory...

So, were you spanked as a child? Only when I did something wrong Spanking is a very effective and loving tool when properly done. I train retrievers and it is similar in that the "student" needs to know or be able to realize what they are doing is wrong or dangerous. And the punishment (spanking) may be somewhat painful but never harmful. I think spanking did me some good, and the rare times we had to spank our kids, I think it did them good. And I think a lot more kids now-a-days need to be shown the proper effects of spanking. I live in Idaho which is pretty old fashioned still (thankfully), but some areas of the country think spanking is barbaric. No, letting your children behave like animals is barbaric. My 2cents

*L* My dad was a tough customer with a temper and I was a hard to handle kid. I got spanked and beaten with belts and switches as a youngster. Never even fazed me when I was pissed off. As I got older and bigger, fists and kicks were often necessary and my mom used to tell stories about my pop and me rolling on the ground beating the daylights out of each other till she'd throw a bucket of water on us like you would fighting dogs. Eventually we fought to a draw and managed to tolerate each other from that time onward. Despite all this, I figure I turned out just fine. As mark has stated, it ain't nice to allow your kids to behave like animals and sometimes a certain level of force is necessary to tame the beasts.
It should be noted, I don't have kids. I've seen those of many of my friends and had them visit my home and that killed that idea real quick. I like good kids but detest badly trained ones. And good God, I might have wound up with a mini me *L*.....Mel

Spanked ? My old man used to hand me his pocket knife and make me cut my own switch. Then he'd wear it out on my butt. In the winter when there was 3' of snow on the ground his belt would come off. That went on up into my early teen years. Then one day when he was about to beat me, I stepped out in the back yard and picked up a piece of 2x4 and told him to bring it. He never beat me again.
Did I mention that my old man was a mean alcoholic ?

My brothers and I were spanked too! In the day,you got your butt beat by most people if you did wrong, even the local cops..(long story).. Our teachers and principal too!! We raised 8 kids, they knew what a spanking was,not many were given, but they knew... Our rules in our home,if a grandchild is out of hand, they too shall get a spanking and have.... It works....

Me too! I deserved every licking I got. I was a terrible, willful child, always getting into trouble.
Dad had a large wooden paddle, with the letters of his college fraternity carved into it. That's usually what I got. But sometimes, he would take an old Corvair fan belt, and make cuts across it so it was more flexible. We called those "fanny belts" lol.
I think it's funny when someone tells you that they don't spank their children, they don't believe in it. Sometimes, it's all I can do to not blurt out, "Yeah, that's pretty obvious!"

Had a "no spanking" couple over for dinner with their kids once. Worse friggin kids ever, one step above wildlife. One of them took a spoonful of mashed taters and shot it against our kitchen wall. Dear ole daddy of theirs seem to think that was cute. I felt like mashing him against the wall but settled on just never having them come over again. Both parents public school teachers and another great reason for not having kids. What a bunch of dumb-asses!.....Mel

Spanked, whuped and switched, depending on what I did and how mad I made someone... all deserved. Wish parents today would start using the techniques, we'd have lots less kids killing, beating, etc. But then I also think we should reinstate the draft, but this time for all genders. Male, female, and other.

As you can imagine I was a tough child to parent. BUT, dad was also a violent prick, so when the principal at elementary school saw the need to give me 3 "swats" [for doing something stupid I am sure] I remember trying real hard not to laugh. Didn't want to piss him off worse! Dude had no clue how to deliver a solid swat!

I was spanked by an open hand when I was young. My Mom was a few slaps but... My dad was a tough hombre who was pretty savage and crazed in the act...not pretty. As I got older, the punishment got more severe. I don't believe I was spanked after I reached puberty(somewhere from 6th grade forward) or thereabouts. My Father's disdain was much more serious (and effective) than physical acts. I did not want to disappoint and I could easily tell when I let him down.
I truly believe that Brutality and Savagery and Anger have no place in Child raising.
If you watch SuperNanny or the Dog Whisperer or similar fare on TV, you see the effect(iveness) of firm parenting without brutality. Look them in the eye, explain the situation, and don't negotiate the non-negotiable.
Many parents dont believe in spanking, but they dont believe in being a parent either. they let the child be the leader and that does not work

I got my spanking and switches ! Deserved them all. Best line Mom ever used: "What till your Dad finds out". Generally that slowed me down. Dad was ruff with the betl. My Mam'maw would tell you to go and pick yourself a switch. If it breaks, the whoppin' starts all over. We has lots of over grown heldges and they made good switches. I was about 14 or so and my brother and I done someting we needed a whoopin'. I was the first and took it like a kid would. She would cause some pain but not like Dad. Next my brother was to get his. Mom raised her arm, belt in hand, started down and before the belt hit him, he started jumping like he was being killed alive. I started laughing, my brother started laughing and then Mom. It was so funny ! Mom told us, "I am too old to be giving y'all whoopin'" ! That was the last time she punished us !

The index finger thumpin’ on the sternum (when I was older) was far more effective.

If I went more than a few days without a spanking I thought I was being neglected! I was the wild child and I earned everyone and more! We had to go get our own switches also from the willow tree in the front yard and you had better get a good one or you would have to go get another after that one broke! We rarely spanked our daughter she was a good kid unlike me! One of the worse ones I remember getting from my Mom I don't remember what I done but she grabbed her favorite hair brush and started spanking me and it broke! It made her so mad that she grabbed a belt and whipped me for breaking her brush!

I see a common thread here... People that were terrible as children, grow up to like rocks! Must be in our genetic makeup.
So, people that were no problem as kids turn out to be what? Politicians? LOL.

LOL Kap. My mom rarely spanked me. But I can remember one time when I really torqued her jaws. She picked up a cast iron skillet and chased me out of the house. Didn't come home until I was sure everyone was asleep. Doors were locked, so I slept on the back porch.
