My kids kind of go in and out of the rock tumbling hobby lately but anytime I mention getting tables at a gem and mineral show they get excited and go all out. Last weekend I told them I signed up for 3 tables at a 2 day show in September and while I was busy with yard work and tending to the slab saw they got busy and filled all the tumbler barrels. I had 18 pounds rolling but after they were done there was a total of 66 pounds rolling. I guess I will just have to be surprised when the next clean out happens since I have no idea what they tossed in. They always use 1 tablespoon per pound of the 46/70 but I worry a little bit about how much water. I think I will make specific measuring cups with sharpie marker lines that say 3 pound, 6 pound, 12 pound right on them so its easier for them (and me too). My son posted this picture on our Facebook when he was done so I thought I would share it here. Chuck

They're going to by busy boys when it's tumbler clean out day! How did everything work out with the power outage? Power came back on after about 34 hours so I just shook all the barrels good to make sure no rocks/grit settled at the bottom and they seemed fine (probably because the kids put too much water in). No such luck with the loto. I had 120 grit in that at the time and it only takes a couple hours with no power before you have to clean that out and get the grit off the rocks before it hardens. Looking at my tumbling schedule it looks like I might be sending in the competition rocks on the last possible day and will have to hand deliver to the post office to make sure they are post marked that day. Nothing like have 18 weeks and then cutting it right down to the wire. Chuck

Kids + tumblers = Happiness. Not sure if the kids or the adults can be separated on that issue. Good luck at the show !

I love that setup! That is exactrly how I would imagine if I made my own. Looks like its a great space saver and gentle on the eyes. Cant wait to get a couple more Lortone tumblers and extra barrels. knowing me, Ill probably start building a copy of your table very soon. 5'Hx5'Lx14"W approximately? Best of luck at the show and getting those stones in on time!

My rock workshop is shared with a finished area of the basement so everything I add down there has to be somewhat clean looking and somewhat quiet. That why the big investment in lortone barrels. Its not my dream workshop but it gets the job done with limited space. You were close on measurements. I think its about 40" long by 14" deep x 40" tall (countertop height) Here's a shot of the original design I made. this is the rest of the matching workshop. I have not taken a new photo yet but I even have the cinder blocks that the lot-o is mounted to covered in wood now. slabs saws are not allowed in the house ;-) Chuck

I like that homemade tumbler design.

Oh wonderful, that drawing will help greatly. The matching tables are really nice also. I might have to modify a place on my woodworking bench to have shelves underneath. I made a wraparound work bench in my garage for various wood projects and have plenty of room on one of the walls for tumbling equipment. I just need to add a couple more electric outlets(only wall without them). I would post what I have to work with but my garage has become embarrassingly messy(too much camping gear, beach gear, lawn tools, woodcutting saws, etc...).

My oldest son joined our local rock club when he was 9 yrs old. He has been a member for three years longer then I have. I built the tumbler with him a few years ago for his 11th birthday. Both my boys like tumbling but other activities can get in the way sometimes. Chuck

Just goes to show youre a kid at heart Great to hear you have a club there as well. Nearest club here (suprisingly) is nearly 2 hours away. Kids around here need more things like that as well as adults but most importantly the kids. Or maybe I should say that the parents around here need to quit being so lazy? Anyhow its always great to hear that there are still parents that keep there kids active outside and when inside, to be active with the things that they to can carry on into there parenthood. Thanks Chuck
