Yep, I just got an old Wards Powercraft (Logan) 10" lathe, the instant reverse motor will be perfect for it.

Hi thehp -
I agree with what the other experts are suggesting in regards to the marathon motor & thermal protection.
While that may be a good price for a new motor, I prefer to spend $10-$15 on a motor (Especially since you're planning several projects and may need more than 1 motor).
1/3 hp continuous duty motors are common and they can easily be found at scrap recycling yards for $10-$15. That's what I do and I've never had a problem. I inspect the motor carefully at the yard before purchasing it. Many times the motors are disposed but they're in perfect working order.
Just my two cents.
Hope it all works out for you.
Sak.

I would LOVE to get some scrap motors, but sadly in my area one family has bought all of the surrounding scrap and metal facilities - and the terms they do business at are a little too strange for me . ( Have to pay an "Entry Picker's Fee" just to browse is one example - it comes off of any purchase - but if you don't find something you need, they keep the $5 . It's not the money, it's the principle ... ) That said I went ahead an pulled the trigger on one of these so my winter project list just got a lot more interesting .

The local metal recycler I use doesn't sell to the public anymore due to a couple close calls forklift vs unaware idiot. The admission fee is probably just a way to have a little control over the people rummaging through their yard, safety and all. I have had some good results from Craigslist and garage/estate sales for used motors, but they just get tested and go on a shelf for emergency backup. For actual repairs or rebuilding a unit I always stick with brand new motors, a couple hours of my time replacing a motor again is worth more to me than a possible bargain.

Hi Rockoonz.
In principal I agree with what you're saying regarding time vs value. So to avoid issues with motors what I've done in the past is I get name brand motors (that are typically expensive when new). The reason for this is that all the parts that may ever need to be replaced are easily available online cheaply.
The last motor that I got was a Bell & Gossett motor. It's been running 24 seven and I haven't had any issues with it as of yet.
This is just what works for me.
Sak.

sak I totally understand, if I weren't working up to 60 hr weeks on the day job, keeping my own home rock shop functional, doing the repair and maintenance for the rock club, plus everything else I might do things a little differently. Right now time is the thing I seem to have the least of. Sounds like you're good at picking them, when I see one at a garage sale or wherever I look for ball bearings, capacitor start/run, and if possible wet or farm duty motors.
