Hey folks! Mid to late October I am headed south from Vancouver, WA to Lake Tahoe, CA. Would love to do some rockhounding closer to the CA side and am looking for some suggestions. I will be solo in a Honda Civic so can't do any major offroading (access roads are fine). Have plenty of hand tools, etc. Thanks for sharing! Erik

If you are going across Mt. Hood (26) then down the east side of the Cascades, you'll have quite a few choices. When you hit Madras, you can make a side-trip to Richardson's Rock Ranch (east of town on 97). You can then turn east from Bend on 20 and hit Glass Buttes (you don't have to leave the main gravel road, and risk tire damage, to find plenty of good obsidian). Hampton Butte for jasperized wood is on the other side of the highway, but the roads can be iffy. Going east from Glass Buttes, you would then turn south on 395 where you can make a side trip to the sunstone mines (long ride on gravel roads, but should still be in good shape in October). Just across the California border on 395, you'll go by the Lassen Creek and Davis Creek obsidian areas (see the USFS ranger station for a free permit and map). Make sure you bring water and keep an eye on your gas gauge.

Thanks for the reply rocks2dust Hvae done some hounding in the Prineville area (thundereggs, etc), might try for Hampton Butte. Probably going to be looking for spots closer to Lake Tahoe since I don't generally go to that area then work my way back. Have to be a bit selective since I am going to be in a Honda Civic and rolling solo. Cheers

Feel free to stop by Lyons, OR (20 miles east of Salem) and say hello. My mother and I'd be happy to share some rocks :-) -Mike

Oh, and there's lots of jasper and agate at Black Butte lake/reservoir 15 miles west of Chico, CA. Serpentine in the feather river. Rhodonite and quartz in Magalia. Happy hunting!
