Congrats on the score!! Pm me your info & I'll get a SFRB together for ya too, I've got plenty of different materials to share the wealth & give you fits - I mean practice - yeah practice with different materials. You can pay it forward down the road when you hit the motherload in the wilds of AK.

Yeah i hope to get really nice stuff some day that i will be willing to not count as a specimen.. I only have around 5-10 things that i could make into cabs as of now. A lot of rock i cut has cracks in em.
Thanks all!
Once it arrives i will post some photos of it and what i make..
I am hoping that once i get my new saw blades that i can use it as a trim saw... Otherwise i will ether use my co-workers saw until i make enough money selling stuff to buy one.

Stupid question, are cabs always flat on the back or can they be rounded on both sides

I think i may need a new motor for my slab saw some time... it was moving today but bound up at a point... unless something got stuck in it i'm not sure why that happned... I got it running in a few min of moving it to the point where it finally went to the 360 rotation... seemed fine after that.

glennz01, yes, cabs can be double-sided. Sorry to hear about your saw. Have you asked about it in the forum discussing equipment to see if someone can help you troubleshoot?

I got it running in a few min of moving it to the point where it finally went to the 360 rotation... seemed fine after that. When a slab saw binds up it is usually one, or a combination of more than one, of the following: A) A dull blade that needs dressing. B) Too fast a feed rate for the size and type of rock being cut. C) An inadequate saw oil/lubricant. D) The rock has slipped in the vise. E) The rock vise carriage is misaligned and is not traveling perfectly parallel with the blade. Larry C. PS. Congratulations on your cabbing machine acquisition and welcome to the hobby!

I'm talking about the motor itself binding up at a point without having the blade on or cutting.. i'm just glad it freed itself

Stupid question, are cabs always flat on the back or can they be rounded on both sides They can be whatever you want - whatever your vision for the finished piece is. Double sided does require a bit more skill and thick skinned fingers because at least the second side has to be done by hand vs. being mounted on a dop stick. PM me your address and I'll also send a SFRB of practice slabs your way. Tommy

I hate dopping. After a few days of cabbing I need to give my fingers some time off. I don't see why you can't dop the front while working on the back for polished backs or double sided cabs. It depends on what you dop with. I'm going to be working on some small or thin cabs and I know it will wreck my fingers. I' going to give super glue a try. If you have a larger cab from a 1/4" + slab you can dome both sides with minimal damage to your fingers. I generally go double sided when both sides are different and special or I've blown the cut on the girdle.

I' going to give super glue a try. Once I went to super glue I will NEVER NEVER NEVER go back to wax. I would quit cabbing if going back to wax were the only option. seriously, did I mention I hated dopping with wax?

if i can i might do a cab a day if thats not too time consuming. I found a few decent pieces of stuff that i slabbed up... my 16 inch saw seems to work fine now so i'm not sure what it did.
I might be getting a free 8 inch trim saw also... if not i will buy a 7 inch tile saw for $100
