hi All, I could use an ID on this rock. It's quite hard. Comes from a Southern California coastal locale. 20 minutes on the flat lap trying to grind on it didn't do much. Any guesses?

not a clue, but it sure is pretty! some sort of jasper? I have never seen a black and white Jasper. Are there any? It's a very solid black material and chalcedony with some nice druzy vugs. We had been finding small pieces of it but this is the biggest so far. No one seems to be able to ID it. I may take it to a local geologist owned mineral shop. He's been good in the past at ID'ing stuff. It really resembles black and white marble.

did you do a scratch test on it? marble is only a 3 on the mohs scale, if it is super hard it is probably not marble... I am sure somebody here with a knowledge of California rocks and jaspers will be able to come closer to an ID on it... do you have any pics of it cleaned up and after you worked on it a bit?

Yes it too hard to be marble but looks very similar. I have not done the scratch test. It is in the workshop which is not at my home but i will take some close up shots of it next time im over there. I havent worked on it at all other than cleaning it and then trying to grind a flat face on it. If it's some new material i get to name it right? Haha! I'm leaning towards Piano Jasper.. (I know now im just daydreaming).

piano jasper? Did you knife test it yet? Would love to see a wet slice of it. Wanna take me rockhounding? I am told there is some crinoid marble on our cost (malibu'ish?) but have yet to see any.

The piano jasper was just a joke in case its new material and i get to name it haha. Haven't knife tested it or scratch tested it. Im just basing the hardness on the fact that the flat lap wasnt really denting it in the 20min that it was on there. Unfortunately this particular piece wont see the saw. It stands up as is so the plan is to face polish it and put on the shelf. Was trying to grind a flat face on it on the flat lap. Probably should have just left it and contour polished it because its got a few flat spots now. If i had a big enough saw i would cut a slice off the face. This stuff was found not too far from where we found the Pacific Picasso. I'll be heading back there soon and plan to stop by this spot as well to hopefully find some more to cut. I havent seen any crinoid marble in the Santa Monica Mountains/Malibu area. But me and a buddy hunt that area often so maybe we'll come across some. If anyone knows it would be Jason Badgley as he's might be the most knowledgeable in that area.

I'd be happy to face cut the piece for you. No charge. The cutoffs are yours too. You don't even have to bring beer. Seriously! This way we can make new friends. PM me if interested.
My saw will leave it ready for 1200 grit pre-polish on the lap, then polish. I got real lucky with that saw.

Don't now what is is but I like it. Could be some kind of sinter as that material is common in the Santa Monicas or maybe some kind of agatized bog or root. Do find occasional wood and wood casts in the region. Shouldn't be any crinoids in that area as I think they are probably too old for the regional geology......Mel

We collect the Pacific Picasso near by and this was eroding out of the hillside.

Interesting. I never collected that far south along the coast. Whatever it is, it sure has interesting patterns and I like the stark black and white contrast. Do you also find black and white fortification type nodules out there?.......Mel

It does have druzy pockets which will yield a ring sometimes but no real fortification. Agates are rare in OC and anything with banding that i've seen resembles the Travertine Onyx from Jalama.
