my best photos with a nice camera, after 14 days 30/60 grit on obsidian(disregard chip on right side) After 2 days at(AO) 220 grit, same magnification. Lookin good, fingers crossed. After 4 days in 220 aluminum oxide. I would say that it is ready for 600 Aluminum oxide. I see a little difference from the 2 day photo above, a softer consistant frost, lest micro pits. It is not the same stone, so that must have some impact. The aluminum oxide should be rounding out and loosing it's sharp edges. All it has to do is smooth the surface in the photo. I feel that 4 days in 220, 4 days in 400 and 4 days in polish should be adequate. Obsidian is soft, it should react quickly to each grit. One of the larger stones at 6 ounces. Assuming it to be most vulnerable to frosting due to it's weight. Looks good.

There is an old saying in the grading business toad. "95% of the work is in the last 5% of the grade". i suppose finishing this fickle obsidian is going to be the same way.and thanks

Those are amazing shots. I would guess that to the naked eye the 220 would look really smooth. I just started my obsidian in the UV18, 240 grit today .... also have fingers crossed.

One thing I feel good about is that the pointed areas on the bigger pieces are not frosted(whiter) when absolutely dry. Camera enlargement way better than (my)naked eyes-ha. This stuff grinds so fast that extra filler and a fuller than normal barrel is not much of a hindrance to grind rate.

Great pics. Good for us newbies to see how much the 220 grit really takes off.

Great pics. Good for us newbies to see how much the 220 grit really takes off. New experience for old vet-obsidian, the royal test of rotary tumblers. Obsidian a great subject to see the surface. Will take another when the 220 aluminum oxide is worn out in 4-6 days. If there were a common problem, the edges would be whiter from frosting moogie, inspected when rock very dry.

I would have thought that too but the lot-o instructions for obsidian that most of us use (Krystees tutorial) has us doing 3-4 days for each stage and that's double to triple the normal amount of time required for rocks in the vibe. Have you ever looked at her tutorial and her closeup photos of obsidian after each stage? Chuck

I had to have ankle surgery about 3 years ago orrum. The doc put me in a wheel chair for 10 months and made me sit still. That made me learn to use a computer, imprisoned in that dang wheelchair. Ha, now hooked. Learned photography as a kid on a tricky old 1957 manual Rolleicord twin lens reflex. It had the large 2" negatives. I used it for 20 years. Poke away orrum, I'll take anything attention I can get

Have you ever looked at her tutorial and her closeup photos of obsidian after each stage? Chuck No, say it's not true. Hoping to find a rock that tumbles fast. Bursting my bubble Chuck ! It is not a big time investment. I will stick to the short 4 day durations for the sake of us impatient tumblers out there. Hoping the aluminum oxide, small glass media, and sugar gets it done. The grit salesman gave me a bunch of AO samples and have used AO 220 and AO 600 and then Rock Shed AO polish on the coral and done well. But AO 46 sure does not coarse grind well. Hoping the short life of AO is going to be in my favor in the finish stages. AO cheap, glass filler free, short tumble times, hoping for a cheap, quick process. Anxious to look at Krystee's tutorial. Will do and thanks. Especially the close-ups. Yes, that blows my mind that obsidian takes longer. It does not seem logical in any sense. I have seen Krystee's obsidian and it is as shiny as it gets. I saw glass you ran thru a lot-o and it was as shiny as it gets, along w/your obsidian. if I can't find Krystee's tut I may ask how to find it.
krystees awesome obsidian formulaChuck
Good timing Chuck, I was just hunting her tut. Search on this forum challenging. Right of the bat I see her photo of a stone finished in 220. It looks smoother than mine. Could be that mine is more magnified, but hers looks smoother. Rutrow And she only ran 2 days in 220. Lot-o amazing. That is a fine tutorial. I will continue. Maybe it will work out. Obsidian beautiful rock. Did you see the box of sweets in step 2 ?
