I'm flying out at the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow for business in Chicago ... flying back late Tuesday night then leaving Wednesday for our trip to Germany - won't be back home until the end of this month. Woohoo! excited. I've never been out of the country except for a short cruise to Mexico 30 years ago but that doesn't really count.
Our destination is Munich - Most of Eva's family lives in that region and south in the town of Garmisch. The family has a room for us to stay in Garmisch where we will stay most of the time and an apartment for us in Munich within walking ... stumbling ... crawling? distance from Oktoberfest from what I understand. We are both SO very excited - Eva gets to see her mommy and brothers and others and I get to finally meet them all. Regarding side trips - we have lots of plans to visit friends of Eva's - even some in Switzerland. We are also talking seriously about a possible jaunt across Austria and into Hungary and maybe as far as Hungary ... yes to look for rocks haha.
so long, fare thee well.

Spent a long weekend in Munich when I was in the Army. Great city with lots of things to see. You'll love it. Be sure and have a schnitzel and a beer for all of us!

They also have a small, but very rich paleontological museum in Munich. You shouldn't miss it. The building itself is part of the museum. Old style, very well arranged. It's part of the University. And while you're in the area (and if you like the paintings), Alte Pinakotek is also a place to visit. On the opposite side, you shouldn't miss visiting the "restrooms" in the giant Oktoberfest tents (in fact, after a few beers it's impossible to miss this visit ). They are a living proof of the German efficiency. If you had made this trip one year ago, we could have met there. Have fun! Adrian

Wishing you a safe trip(s), Tommy, and have fun on your ventures and meeting family! Wondered if you would be near Idar-Oberstein?

Sounds like a fantastic trip Tommy. If you have any chance at all, plan a day or 2 in Idar-Oberstein and tour the German Gemstone Route. If there's no time for anything but I-O, definitely visit the 2 gemstones museums there. They're awesome and display world class gems including some of the amazing local agates that began the twin cities' agate-cutting industry in the Middle Ages. The place is a gemstone lover's feast! (The local open fire Spiebratten and Hunsruck cuisine afford another kind of delicious feast).

yeah, what Rick said!! It appears modern lapidary started in Germany...... follow his lead.
Me, I am just envious that you get to go to Germany, but mostly because you get to go with Eva. Folks, Eva is really the franchise. Tommy is a great guy and all (we all know that!!) but Eva is the motivation behind Tommy's endeavors. Tommy and Eva are the most synergistic couple I have ever met. They are so good together and of course to each other. The are both better for the other.
I know you both will share a terrific adventure. The weather will be cold, bring a jacket. And, of course, please share my caring and respect to your lovely bride. Have a great trip!
noch ein Bier bitte!! Prost!!
Photos please, and thank you.
