I'm probably going to look at a used Lortone model C-40 rock tumbler... Providing it all works the guy is wanting $500 for it (sells new for 770+ shipping)
What does everyone recommend?

If its all good, make a slightly lower offer and if he doesn't take you up on it, grab it up! If it is dirty or rusty or beat up somehow then make a lower offer and tell him why you are offering less. If it works fine you are still money ahead at that price. I buy used stuff all the time though I have never bought used tumblers. Ultimately you have to decide for yourself! Best wishes.

What kind of motor does it have? I've bought/been given two used Lortones (a 33B and a QT) and both motors are now shot. I'm in the process of building my own tumbler ala jamesp. When it is all said and done I will have far less than $200 in it, be able to handle multiple speeds and multiple barrels. I like the idea of running several smaller barrels at the same time, rather than needing to fill up one big barrel for each stage. Just my $0.02

The C-40 would be a nice tumbler. Very well built and there are no motor concerns like with the smaller tumblers since it uses a normal 1/3 HP motor. I have several smaller used lortone's too and have not replaced any motors yet (knock on wood).
I would shoot for closer to $400 unless it looks very good. The C-40 has a thick rubber liner so it might not be too loud. If noise is not an issue the home built's with PVC barrels are very affordable. My home built is indoors so I needed rubber Lortone barrels and the 12 pounders are about $75 each so by the time you buy a few of those plus all the shafts, bearings and motor it would be over $400 anyway.
I do prefer having multiple 12 pound barrels instead of one large barrel so I am not forced to have 40 pounds of rough going and I am not locked into the 4 pounds of grit every week. I fluctuate between 24 and 60 pounds a week depending on what kind of time I have and what kind of rough I have on hand. Keep in mind that 40 pounds of rock means a pretty lengthy amount of time inspecting rocks every week to see what is ready for the next stage and what goes back in.

Well said Chuck. I can build PVC for a little less than 1/2 the price of a Lortone barrel. By simply using a longer stick of 6 inch PVC i have a 20 pound barrel for little added cost. Prefer 12- 20 pound barrels, a mix. 20 pounds of rough transfers to a 12 pound barrel for finish after weeding trash out perfect. Draw back is that they are noisy. A positive note is the rubber cap is user friendly. For a single set of 1 inch shafts I was under $200, using used 1/8 HP roof top A/C fan motor. That fan motor has turned 36 pounds, but is on the warm side.

Ok, well i will check it out... unless i'm able to find a motor for my other base. The good thing with a large barrel is you can tumble large things, In my AR-12 if i want to tumble something large (4 inch by 4 inch diameter) it takes up a lot of space and i can't full my barrel nearly as full as you normally would (to get a nice tumble on it).

Ahhh well that's a different story. Big rocks need big barrels. Go for it. Chuck

I will post pictures of mine as I build it. I'm hoping to start this weekend. link

Here is a wood base w/1/8 HP motor that I built easily and cheaply. Ideas from photo anyway. One inch shafts. Will roll 35 pounds. Six inch barrel RPM about 25. Sheaves on end if posi-traction desired. Single reduction.

Thanks for the homemade tumbler info! I thought about offering up some plans for a simple tumbler. I made the design and posted it but never made dimensional drawings. Pretty easy to figure out from the photos though. basic tumbler design Chuck

Well i did buy the tumbler... for me it would have cost more to buy the motor and barrel brand new (including shipping) than this was sold to me for.. Only been used once before it got put in storage... The rollers are a little rusty but everything else looks slightly used (better than my tumbler) the motor looks like it came out of the package

I'm thinking i will tumble a lot of my flint ridge ohio flint that i get from my local flint knapper along with some of the large agates and jasper's i have found this and last year.... I might start it up running on monday as i need to clean my other tumbler out then. Not sure if i will have space to run both tumblers... if i don't i'll polish up the batch i have for the 12 lb tumbler than go to the large tumbler... I will probably save the small tumbler for polishing more small and expensive material... I'll make that call after the first round though.
