Forgot to note that any day now overnight at least i can get snow... so i am desperately going to try to do some river walks to find some cabbing material if this thing called homework ever relaxes enough. Once snow comes i will be tumbling, cutting, and cabbing only.... there is maybe only 1 place i can rockhound for prehnite if there is not a lot of snow.

well yesterday after i took the foam out the bubbles have not came back... needless to say i put some sugar in as someone mentioned earlier.. Never tryed that method before.
As for pics of tumbled stones I have 20 lbs (2 weeks worth) of polished stones i have yet had time to clean (apart from a piece of blizzardstone)

Glenn, this is where you would say "Thank you" for that suggestion. Just sayin. Would love to see pics of the progress!

Well the rocks are out of the trial thread and came out as i expected... The soft stones have gotten fairly rounded (a little more than Silicon carbide) The harder stones like agates didnt round and kind of got wind polished so to speak, but it did take a lot of the basalt off the rocks.
However i have added sugar into the mix more as a trail on the bubbles to the advice of someones prior posting... Well i will never do that again, my barrel was bloated like a pot belly pig. This was the only time i have had that happen. (i have ran tungsten carbide before so i know it was not the cause). When i put the sugar in origionally there was no bubbles in the solution which i took out the previous day, so if it was to bubble there would have been some foam. Still no foam when i took it out. Also there was a foul smell after opening..
Needless to say all the slurry from that batch is gone.
The grit is still good to be used for more rounds
Again this method is only for softer stones, this is not very effective on hard stones unless you want to remove outside soft material. pictures coming soon.

Sorry to hear the sugar did not work for you. Always had trouble with metals regardless of the mix. Have to burp the barrel daily when tumbling metal. Sounds like a tungsten milk shake. How many times have you run tungsten ? Have tumbled with diamond segments and had foam w/that too. Five pounds of diamond segments with 12 pounds of agate. It did not effect the agate much. "I tumble a lot of metals in the rotary Glenn. They always produce foam. All metals. It does not matter when tumbling soft metals, they tumble quickly because they are soft. But if you mix metals w/rocks the foam will hinder the grinding of the rocks. I have always added sugar to reduce foam and it works on rocks. But not w/metals. The grit/slurry is acidic and it reacts w/the metal causing bubbles which leads to foam. The Tums is a good direction but the reaction of the grit may overcome the buffering of the Tums." How many times have you run tungsten ? Have tumbled with diamond segments and had foam w/that too. Five pounds of diamond segments with 12 pounds of agate. It did not effect the agate much. I have ran batches with tungsten carbide for 10 rounds (10 weeks). After I clear the foam after the first time it usually doesn't act up any more... Of all the times i have ran it i never had any bloating issues.... The foam while it may slightly hinder grinding doesn't effect the tungsten carbide much as it is a heavy material and very large grit.. The grit itself hardly wares down.. (I ran the same 4 tablespoons for the full 10 weeks and still looks great) The foam does not seem to bloat the barrel any on the 10 runs I had (minor if any). It is only good for soft rocks granted. Once the barrel reforms back i will try with only coal slag, i have always used it as an additive if i had very rough rock in addition to the silicon carbide, never tried by itself.

Thought so at first, just let the pressure out slowly... no problems

Here are a few examples from the tungsten carbide batch.. as you can see the softer pink stone (color not well shown) rounded extremely well from being broken by a hammer. the agate had most of the basalt removed and the agate itself got a wind blown riverbed polish.

What materials are you tumbling?
Are you tumbling more than one in the same barrel?

Anyone know the specific gravity here. Pretty dense I think. Jim
