radio: Yep, Lake McClure is right at the lower end of the valley. I've hunted jade and mariposite around Bagby but I was mainly interested in poppy and brecciated jasper and Hunters Valley, where we had our ranch was the epicenter for the jasper.....Mel

I have heard of some pretty stuff over there. I still like Morgan Hill material better though, fractures and all Speaking of Bagby, I had a friend who lived in L.A and spent his Summers camped out at Bagby dredging for gold. He ran a 6 inch hot rod dredge and uncovered one helluva pay streak one year and pulled over 60 ounces out of it with some nuggets big as half dollars. The best Mariposite I found was very near Coulterville

I was in a skilled nursing home in Jacksonville, Fl. My mother was recovering from surgery when another patient came down the hall saying that a plane had crashed into a large NY building and was on fire. I didn't believe this person until I turned the TV on. This is a memory like going into a greenhouse at the Univ. of Ga. And being told Kennedy had been shot in Dallas.

Like most, I was at work. One of the Production Supervisors was late coming in that day, called and said a plane hit the Towers. Dragged out the TV we used for showing training videos, cobbled up an antennae sort of thing and managed to get network broadcast on it. Hoping it was some sort of stupid accident (but doubting it) until we saw the second plane hit. Never forget. Never forgive.

I stopped myself from hitting like, too. Seems wrong somehow. I spent some time talking to the grandkids today about it. My granddaughter is in 8th grade. One of her teachers showed a vid from youtube with the poor souls jumping. I was shocked that the school would let him. But, I was kinda glad, too. They need to understand the horror. Some of the kids were crying. They talked for a good while about it. She was more than willing to talk some more at home. She was clearly moved, angry and upset. Those who forget the past, are doomed to repeat it.

I was at work, getting coffee in the kitchen when the first plane struck.
and was glued to the TV screen after that, really hit home for me.
I worked on the 86th floor of 2 World Trade Center for 5 years.
As the rest of the planes hit, I was really getting sick.
Spent most of the day on the phone, trying to get through to people to see if they were ok... or not...phone lines were jammed

Radio: Though it's called Hornitos Poppy Jasper or Hornitos Brecciated Jasper, most the jasper from that area is from Hunters Valley NE of Hornitos. I was told there is a Hornitos location for the breccia but I talked to a lot of old time miners and no one knew the location. All the famous old jasper pits from the 1960's were rediscovered by my buddy and I and they were all in lower Hunters Valley and some are now under active claim.
Best Mariposite I've found was from the old John Fremont Pinetree and Josephine Mine north of Bear Valley. Had a buddy take me in there who said it was OK but I later found out it had been posted but the signs were all gone. Oops!. Too bad, as the Mariposite from the dumps down there was really spectacular stuff and plentiful in large hunks. I still have a little in my rock garden. I never understand why some of those landowners don't exploit their mineral resources for the lapidary trade. Those big hunks would have been excellent for carving or spheres....Mel
